Bootstrapped and Unbroken: The Bare-Bones Beginning of Claro

In our early years, we didn't have much. No fancy office only borrowed resources. What we did have was a hand-drawn sketch of a desk, a borrowed car packed with the team, and the willingness to work from a place of deep frugality with nothing but conviction.

We designed our own humble office layouts because outsourcing it wasn't an option. We shared rides because resources were tight. And we worked from wherever we could, because the mission to bring solar energy to India mattered more than comfort.

Fifteen years later, Claro has grown far beyond those humble beginnings. But that scrappy, make-it-work spirit? That's still in our DNA. This is where it all started, with ingenuity, perseverance, and a refusal to let constraints define us.

Not Every Partnership Lasts! But Our Commitment to Innovative Solar Did!

In our early years, we partnered with Solyndra, a Silicon Valley solar innovator that pioneered cylindrical CIGS thin-film rooftop panels backed by a major US government loan guarantee, to deploy their groundbreaking technology on a project in Bihar. It was an audacious bet on innovation at a time when the global solar industry was still finding its feet.

But within the same year, Solyndra filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after a brutal collapse in solar panel prices and intense global competition, abruptly ending what could have been a long-term collaboration. For us, that setback became a powerful lesson: technologies may fail, but the conviction to push solar forward in India cannot and that resilience has shaped the Claro journey ever since.

Partnerships and possibilities.

As our early work in solar irrigation gathered momentum, we began to find like-minded believers who wanted to push the boundaries of what clean energy could do for India. Later in 2011, that search led us to collaborate with global solar major SunEdison to engineer solutions for more complex use cases, including a hybrid solar rooftop plus pumping system on the roof of their Chennai headquarters.

In these photos, you can see Pashu Gopalan, then CEO of SunEdison, alongside the founders of Simpa Networks, inspecting the system our team had set up. Those moments on that rooftop captured something bigger than a single project. These pictures reflect a growing ecosystem of innovators coming together to accelerate India’s solar story.

From farmlands to corridors of power

In 2011, solar irrigation was still an unfamiliar idea, and making it mainstream meant building an entire ecosystem around it. So we spent months in meetings and field visits with ministers like Giriraj Singh and Farooq Abdullah, committed bureaucrats, lenders from the World Bank and other institutions, and of course, farmers on the ground.

Those conversations were not just about technology, they were about trust, policy support, financing frameworks, and farmer awareness. Brick by brick, this coalition helped transform solar irrigation from a promising concept into a credible solution for India’s agriculture.

Fifteen years ago, solar for agriculture was still a sunrise idea in India. In 2011, long road trips through rural heartlands showed us just how dependent farmers were on expensive, polluting diesel pumps for irrigation.

Those journeys planted a powerful question: could clean energy make irrigation both affordable and reliable for smallholder farmers? That question led us to engineer India’s first 7.5 HP solar irrigation pump in Nalanda, Bihar – and, in many ways, it also led to the birth of Claro Energy as a dedicated solar irrigation company.

As we celebrate 15 years of Claro, this Day 1 throwback is a reminder of where it all began: in the fields, with farmers, chasing a better way to power Indian agriculture.

Do solar panels work in winter? Yes, they do

Solar panels don’t rely on heat—they generate electricity from sunlight. Even during winter months, available daylight continues to produce power and reduce your electricity bills.

While energy output can vary due to shorter days, fog, or cloudy weather, a well-designed solar system is planned to perform efficiently across all seasons.

With the right sizing, orientation, and technology, solar continues to deliver reliable savings—even in winter.

Smart design. Year-round solar performance.
