Congratulations to CMERI for developing the solar power tree model which can light up 5 homes using just 4 Sq Ft of land compared to 500 Sq Ft used by a conventional solar array. Each tree can produce 5KW and comes with self cleaning with a built in water sprinkler. It holds the panels at a higher height - thus gets more sun (by 1 hour) in a day in comparison to that of conventional layout on ground. This could also be rotated so that the photovoltaic panel get more sunlight. Thus, it is possible to harness 10-15 per cent more power.

The government has set the ambitious target of generating 100 GW of solar power by the year 2021-22 under the National Solar Mission. It is envisaged to generate 60 GW ground mounted grid-connected solar power and 40 GW through roof-top grid interactive solar power to fulfill the 100 GW of solar power. The Ministry has also fixed year-wise targets to monitor the solar power generation in the country.

The target for the current year is 2,000 MW and next year target is 12,000 MW. The Ministry is putting all efforts through various schemes of Central Government and State Governments to achieve the targets. It has been planned that around 18,000 MW tender should be out by 31st March, 2016.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved scaling up of budget from Rs 600 crore to Rs 5,000 crore for implementation of Grid Connected Rooftops systems over a period of five years upto 2019-20 under the National Solar Mission (NSM). This will support installation of 4,200 MW Solar Rooftop systems in the country in the next five years.
The capital subsidy of 30 per cent will be provided for general category states/UTs and 70 per cent for special category states i.e., the North-Eastern States including Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Lakshadweep, Andaman & Nicobar Islands. There will be no subsidy for commercial and industrial establishments in the private sector since they are eligible for other benefits such as accelerated depreciation, custom duty concessions, excise duty exemptions and tax holiday etc...InT
