We are proud to share the publication of Beyond Irrigation: Harnessing the Untapped Potential of Solar Pumps, a report that presents the findings of an experimental field study to assess the possibilities of secondary use of solar energy generated from solar pumps.

The study was funded by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and implemented by Oorja across our operational districts in Uttar Pradesh to evaluate whether spare solar energy from irrigation pumps can be channelled into village grain mills to generate deeper social and economic value.

Using a matched-pair cluster randomised design covering over 500 households across 20 villages, the research examines adoption patterns, cost implications, gender dynamics, food behaviour, and the policy relevance of secondary-use models. A strong Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) lens was integrated into the study, with dedicated analysis on women’s mobility, access to milling services, and how infrastructure design influences everyday decision-making.

The report was co-authored by Sejal Agarwal (Impact Manager) and Hridya V M (Senior Project Associate) from Oorja, along with colleagues from IISD. We extend our sincere thanks to the IISD team and all participating communities who made this research possible.

This , we’re reflecting on a simple but often overlooked reality of Indian agriculture.

Across rural India, women play a crucial role in sustaining agriculture. They sow, harvest, and manage farms every day. Many take on even greater responsibilities as more men migrate to cities for work. Yet despite their central role in agriculture, women farmers remain largely invisible in conversations about agriculture, technology adoption, and farming policy.

If we are serious about building climate-resilient agriculture, we cannot ignore the farmers who sustain it.

In our latest blog, our Communications Associate Argha Ghose explores why recognising women farmers and improving their access to irrigation, knowledge, and agricultural services is essential for stronger farms, resilient livelihoods, and a more inclusive agricultural future.

Many farmers across our operational districts traditionally grow one or two staple crops in a season, mainly wheat, paddy or sugarcane. This isn’t only because of irrigation constraints, but also due to limited access to knowledge about high-value crops, scientific cultivation methods, input preparation and crop management.

Over the past few years, this has started to shift. With regular support from Oorja’s Farmer Advisory team, farmers are gradually diversifying their cropping patterns. Many now grow peas, potatoes, capsicum, cabbage and even flowers alongside staples. Instead of leaving land fallow after harvesting wheat or paddy, they are planning additional crop cycles.

Crop diversification is helping farmers spread risk, improve land use across seasons and create additional income opportunities while contributing to better soil health.

Women in rural India are not held back by lack of skill or willingness. They are held back by norms that question their competence, load them with unpaid care work, and quietly pass opportunity to men.

Our recent household survey in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, surfaced how deeply these barriers run, across income levels. From self-doubt shaped by years of exclusion, to families discouraging women from earning in the name of status, the constraints are structural, not personal.

In this blog, Hridya VM, Senior Project Associate at Oorja, reflects on these realities and shares what changes when women are given time, training, and trust. Including the story of Shanthi Devi, whose leadership as a water operator reshaped both payment discipline and community perception.
