You inflate the cuff. You check the seal. But do you actually know the pressure?
The pilot balloon can feel firm or soft, but that feeling does not tell you the actual cuff pressure.

And that matters because there is a narrow range where you want it to be.
For adult endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes, the commonly referenced range is 20 to 30 cmH₂O.

So the next time you reach for the pilot balloon, remember:
What you feel isn’t necessarily what the cuff is experiencing.
