Budget impact on solar energy industry in India:

The budget announcement has two things to note for the solar energy sector:

1)- Doubling of coal cess from Rs.200/ton to Rs.400/ton
2)- Reduction of accelerated depreciation from 80% to 40%

Doubling of Coal Cess:

Doubling of coal cess has brought cheers to the renewable energy industry. Increasing coal price from Rs.200 per ton to Rs.400/ton may increase the cost of thermal energy by 6-7%. Already thermal energy sector is in stiff competition with solar energy. The increase in cost of thermal energy can lead to greater adoption of solar.

But the fund raised from doubling the cost will be channelised to National Clean Environment Fund which was originally National Clean Energy Fund. Therefore the fund is most likely to be used for other environmental causes than just renewable energy. The industry therefore continues to speculate whether the fund will be used for promoting solar energy or the rooftop solar.

Reduction in Accelerated Depreciation (AD)

From the fiscal 2017-18, solar energy projects can claim only 40% AD benefits from the current 80%. Accelerated Depreciation allows a commercial & industrial project to claim greater tax-benefits during its initial years.
At 80% A.D, the cost of solar energy is Rs 0.40-Rs. 0.60 per unit cheaper than normal projects. When 40% A.D comes into effect, the margin will come down to Rs 0.20-Rs.0.30 per unit.

Now a days, Hospitals both in urban and rural areas consume a lot of energy throughout the day as the electrical equipment used directly or indirectly to treat patients require uninterrupted power. Many hospitals have considerable unused rooftop space. Combined with power shortages and rising cost of diesel, rooftop solar power makes a compelling case for implementation in hospitals; there are several advantages but also several constraints that need to be considered when deciding on and designing a rooftop solar power system for a hospital, such as using a variable source of power like solar to power equipment used in life saving situations.

Solar Energy is almost infinitely renewable Because solar power takes its energy from the sun, there's very little chance that the sun will cease being a source of energy – for the next one billion years at least. Other typical forms of energy, such as coal, gas and oil, will one day run out.
