Panna is a district of Madhya Pradesh which is famous for its Tiger Sanctuary and diamond mines.Panna introduced diamond to the world for the first time and is situated at a distance of 20 kilometers from the globally famous Khajuraho, which is connected by rail and air.
Millions of years ago, due to volcanic eruption, precious diamonds came out of the earth's womb and got deposited on the earth's surface of Panna, hence Panna is also known as Ratnagarbha. Diamonds are being mined here since 2000 years. Miners have received precious diamonds of gem grade whose size ranges from 10 cents -20 carats , which is very common here .
The Government of Madhya Pradesh provides a lease for one year to any citizen of India to mine diamonds . The diamonds coming out of these authorized mines are deposited in the Government Diamond Office. From here in every three months auctions are conducted. Diamond traders from India and abroad are invited in this open auction . The government receives 12% royalty from the value received from the auction and immediately pays the remaining amount to the mine owner.

PROCESSING
Diamond baring lava from the volcano got spread over and into the rocks and solidified into a layer of hard rock , which was then over thousands of years got covered with another 10-20 feet of soil. Soil and Rock is then removed from the diamond rock layer with the help of machines and labor, the diamond containing mineral is taken out from the mines and the diamond mineral ore will be finely crushed with the help of a crusher. After crushing , washing and sorting will be done with help of skilled labour to extract the diamond.
Every lease needs to be renewed on 31st dec.

The total cost of mining a 688 square feet (8 X 8 meters) mine is Rs 4,50,000
