December 16th is famous in India for the celebration of Vijay Diwas, which commemorates India's victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war for the independence of Bangladesh.
On December 16, 1971, the Pakistani Army surrendered in Dhaka, ending the war and nine months of atrocities in Bangladesh. This was the largest military surrender since World War II. The victory led to the liberation of East Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh.
Vijay Diwas is a day to remember the martyrs and their sacrifices, and to strengthen the role of the armed forces.
