Why do we soak red bricks before brickwork? 🧱💧 1. Prevents Bricks from Absorbing Water from Mortar
Red bricks are porous and absorb water quickly.
If dry bricks are used, they suck water from the cement mortar immediately.
➡ This causes:
• Weak bonding between brick and mortar
• Poor strength of the wall
2. Proper Cement Hydration
Cement needs water for hydration (chemical reaction) to gain strength.
When bricks are wet, they don’t pull water from the mortar, allowing the cement to cure properly.
3. Better Bond Between Brick and Mortar
Wet bricks help the mortar stick properly, which makes the wall stronger and more durable.
4. Prevents Cracks in the Wall
If mortar dries too quickly because of dry bricks, it may cause:
• Shrinkage
• Small cracks in joints
5. Improves Workability
Masons can align and place bricks better when bricks are slightly wet.
Correct Method
• Soak bricks in water for 10–20 minutes before use
• Bricks should be wet but not dripping.
