DAASE Engages 502 Students in Large-Scale Telescope making Workshop at IIT Indore's Student Orientation program - Genesis 2025.

The Department of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Engineering (DAASE) at IIT Indore successfully conducted a large-scale, hands-on Telescope Making Workshop for four groups totaling 502 newly enrolled B.Tech students.

As part of our 'Genesis' orientation, the initiative featured an engaging session by our Department Outreach Coordinator, Dr. Deepika Bollimpalli, who introduced the students to the fascinating world of telescopes. This was followed by a practical demonstration by Mr. Anand, with invaluable support from our PhD scholars, 3rd-year B.Tech students, and the Astronomy Club.

Successfully engaging such a large number of students highlights our commitment to fostering the next generation of innovators in space science.

That's a wrap on the SKA-India Training School 2025! ๐Ÿš€

We've just concluded two incredible weeks of deep diving into the world of radio astronomy! From July 7th to July 18th, it was an absolute pleasure to host 43 bright and enthusiastic students from all across India!

Over the past two weeks, participants engaged with a wide array of topics - from the fundamentals of the radio sky and pulsars to the cosmological mysteries of the early universe, all delivered by leading experts in the field.

A special highlight of the workshop was the hands-on lab experiments. We are incredibly proud of the students from our own Department of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Engineering (DAASE) at IIT Indore, who expertly guided the participants through these sessions, utilizing the department's highly equipped, state-of-the-art labs.

Here's to the next generation of astronomers and engineers who will lead India's journey with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA)! Thank you to all the speakers, participants, and organizers for making this a grand success.

๐ŸŒŸObservatory Visit โœจ
๐Ÿ’ซIIT Indore Radio Interferometer (IIRI) ๐ŸŒ

Bridging theory with groundbreaking practice. A key objective of the SKA Summer School is to provide a holistic learning experience. Today, we achieved a major milestone by organizing a visit to the IIT Indore Radio Interferometer (IIRI) for our participants.

This tour allowed them to see firsthand the sophisticated engineering and intricate systems that power modern radio astronomy, perfectly complementing their classroom learning. The insightful questions and keen observations from the participants underscore the success of this immersive program.

We are confident that we are fostering future leaders for the Square Kilometre Array and beyond.

The final session began with two consecutive talks by Dr. Mayuresh Surnis from IISER Bhopal. His presentations primarily emphasized the significance of utilizing phased array techniques for observing pulsars. He commenced by outlining the challenges associated with pulsar observations using interferometers and gradually transitioned into strategies for conducting pulsar observations with phased arrays.

Dr. Mayuresh Surnis discussed the concepts of beam forming in both coherent and incoherent arrays, providing valuable insights into the relationship between beamforming and interferometry. He delivered an in-depth lecture on the mechanics of phased arrays and the process of phased array beam forming. Additionally, he covered the topic of phased array feeds and showcased pulsar search observations conducted with phased array technology.

Following the lectures, the venue was opened for a feedback session, allowing participants to share their constructive comments and experiences from the workshop.

โš™๏ธ Day-9 Afternoon Session ๐Ÿ”ฉ

In todayโ€™s hands-on session, participants were introduced to the heterodyne receiver chain used in radio telescopes. The functions of key components such as mixers, local oscillators (LO), and low-pass filters (LPF) were explained in detail. The concepts of upconversion and downconversion of RF signals, along with their importance, were also covered.

Following this, a thorough demonstration was provided where participants learned how to connect each stage of the receiver chain. This process began with the RF input, which is mixed with an LO signal, followed by filtering the intermediate frequency (IF) output, and finally analyzing the signal on a spectrum analyzer. The setup was practically assembled and tested using signal generators to simulate input signals, offering participants valuable hands-on experience in signal processing within a radio receiver system.
