Our Pineapple from Ribhoi Meghalaya

growing harvesting by farmers

Pineapple growing and harvesting by Meghalaya farmers centers mainly on traditional varieties like Giant Kew and Queen, cultivated predominantly in districts like Ri-Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, and Garo Hills. Meghalaya produces around 40,000 to 45,000 metric tonnes of pineapples annually, involving over 50,000 farmers, and is recognized for its high-quality, succulent pineapples with a GI tag enhancing its market demand and price premium[1][2][3].

# # # Growing Practices
Farmers in Meghalaya plant pineapples mostly on hilly slopes using indigenous cultural practices passed down generations. Predominantly rainfed cultivation is used, leveraging the state's ample rainfall and moderate climate. Traditional farming often aligns with organic and sustainable methods that avoid chemical residues, making Meghalaya's pineapples attractive for certified organic markets. Intercropping with crops like ginger is also a practiced technique to augment income[1][2][4][5].

# # # Harvesting
The harvesting stage involves careful cutting of the stem end of the fruit, typically kept short (around 2 cm) to maintain quality. Pineapples are harvested when mature but before overripening to ensure the best texture and flavor for fresh markets and value-added products. Post-harvest handling techniques are being increasingly taught in training programs to reduce losses and improve shelf life[6][7].

# # # Challenges and Support
Farmers face challenges like pests, diseases, infrastructure gaps (lack of cold storage), and market access, but government and NGOs actively support technical training, financial subsidies, and market linkages. Initiatives include workshops on pest management, value addition like juice and jam production, and facilitating exposure to broader markets—both domestic and international. The state has also organized pineapple festivals to promote the fruit and align supply with demand[2][3][7][8].

In summary, Meghalaya's pineapple farmers use traditional and sustainable growing methods, harvesting carefully to ensure quality, supported by government and community initiatives to enhance productivity and market reach. This improves farmers' livelihoods while positioning Meghalaya as a significant pineapple-growing region in India[1][2][3][4][7].

5 photos showing a 7 week paddy field on which TribalAg Limited Agrisage Sri D. Rajasekhar is helping with. The plants are already 3.5 feet and the farmer had never seen such broad leaves or height in his rice field even near harvest time.
This particular area already had plenty of cow manure applied for growing pudina before being converted to a rice field. This is part of a one acre rice field. After pudding the farmer had applied 35 kg of DAP which he had already bought. Later he broadcast 100 kg of steel slag granules under the brand name CASIMA, which was given to him. We had already started creating ferments from the leaf mold in a drum. After the transplant pseudomonas was applied. After a week the ferment was applied. The ferments have been applied 3 times so far. We later applied 10 kg of KN biosciences product called Bhushakti, which comes in granulated form. It contains humic acid, sea w**d extract, PGPRs and NPK fixing bacteria. The ferment also contains many organisms and nutrients. Another ferment that will be readied for regular spraying in a week's time, will be made with buffalo dung, leaves of neem, karanj and sitaphals to handle air born pathogens and pests. All ferments nourish the plants and soil, while managing the PH which is disturbed by ground water. We already have another ferment which is made up of peels and chopped plant materials to give nourishment to the above ground part of the plants. No urea has been applied and naturally no insecticide and herbicides.
