The Running Chicken Nebula processed by Zubuyer Kaolin and observed by Peter Jenkins using our CHI-2: an ASA 500N, a 19.6 inch (50 cm) is a Newtonian telescope with field corrector, situated in the Rio Hurtado Valley, Chile.

IC 2944, also known as the Running Chicken Nebula or the λ Centauri Nebula, is an open cluster with an associated emission nebula found in the constellation Centaurus, near the star λ Centauri. It features Bok globules, which are frequently a site of active star formation. However, no evidence for star formation has been found in any of the globules in IC 2944.

Comet NEOWISE is visible in an aurora-filled sky in this photo by Aurorasaurus Ambassador Donna Lach. The photo was taken early on July 14, 2020, in western Manitoba, Canada. The purple ribbon-like structure to the left is STEVE, an aurora-related phenomenon discovered with the help of citizen scientists working with the Aurorasaurus project. The bright streak near the top of the image is a meteor.

Lach tells how she captured the photo: “I took several shots of the comet a few days prior with my zoom lens, and caught a whiff of aurora in a few shots. I had hoped the aurora forecast was right, since we had clear skies the previous night. I fought off mosquitoes as I waited for the never-ending dusk to show me what was in the sky. Finally, at about 11:30 p.m. CDT, the aurora and comet were both appearing, and I could see it was going to be epic. The large, thick band of aurora soon started to dance, showing brilliant blues and purples looking to the west. When I saw some loops skipping out of the main band at the westward side, I was pretty sure I would see STEVE soon also, so I kept watching. Finally, at about 1:00 a.m., STEVE was visible. I was excited to see my wide-angle lens could capture the span from STEVE to NEOWISE, and got about 10 photos. I observed the incredible aurora for about 3 hours, and it sometimes stretched above me. At times NEOWISE was outshone by the brilliant aurora, but it was visible the entire time.”

After local midnight on July 14 comet NEOWISE was still above the horizon for Goldenrod, Alberta, Canada, just north of Calgary, planet Earth. In this snapshot it makes for an awesome night with dancing displays of the northern lights. The long-tailed comet and auroral displays are beautiful apparitions in the north these days. Both show the influence of spaceweather and the wind from the Sun. Skygazers have widely welcomed the visitor from the Oort cloud, though C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) is in an orbit that is now taking it out of the inner Solar System.

In the coming weeks, NASA’s Perseverance rover will head to Mars to explore the remains of a muddy river delta more than 3 billion years old. The journey could help resolve the debate of whether ancient Mars was warm and wet or cold and dry.

This beautiful image, captured with the FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS) on ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), shows a field of stars of all ages — some looming close in the foreground, and others lurking in the far distance. The distinct red and blue hues are thanks to the use of filters, which allow the selection of specific wavelength ranges of light. The images collected with different filters can be combined in order to create colourful composite images: by assigning a particular color to each filter; colouring the images according to the filter used; then combining the separate images. The result is a spectacular image which colourfully represents the various wavelengths of light.

This patch of sky is found in the constellation of Crux (The Southern Cross), an extremely bright section of the Milky Way. It was imaged as part of the ESO Cosmic Gems programme, an outreach initiative to produce images of interesting, intriguing or visually attractive objects using ESO telescopes, for the purposes of education and public outreach. The programme makes use of telescope time that cannot be used for science observations. All data collected may also be suitable for scientific purposes, and are made available to astronomers through ESO’s science archive.

Planetary nebula SuWt 2 would be the perfect subject for an episode of the Cold Case Files (not literally—it contains two stars hotter than our sun).

Planetary nebulas are the result of a dying star shedding its outer layers into space. Ultraviolet radiation from a white dwarf helps the system glow.

However, in the case of SuWt 2, the white dwarf is nowhere to be found. Instead, within the nebula, two ultra-hot stars circle each other. The case wasn’t too tough for scientists to crack—the leading theory involves a third star: https://bit.ly/2XN7Q57

Unspeakable beauty and unimaginable bedlam can be found together in the Orion Nebula. Arguably the most famous of all astronomy nebulas, the Great Nebula in Orion is an immense interstellar molecular cloud only 1500 light-years away. In the featured deep image shown in assigned colors, the part of the nebula's center known as M43 is shown as taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The Great Nebula in Orion can be found with the unaided eye near the easily identifiable belt of three stars in the popular constellation Orion. The entire Orion Nebula, including both M42 and M43 spans about 40 light years and is located in the same spiral arm of our Galaxy as the Sun.

On this day in 2012, physicists at CERN discovered the Higgs particle, confirming the theory of how particles acquire mass.

But before the particle was discovered it had to be imagined - by theoretical physicists François Englert and Peter Higgs, who were awarded the Nobel Prize in 2013, almost 50 years after they first independently came up with the theory of the Higgs.
