NASA releases map of India on Diwali night

NASA, the national space agency of the U.S., on Thursday released a black and white satellite imagery of India Diwali night 2012, cautioning people against the fake image in circulation on the social media.

“On November 12, 2012, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite captured this night-time view of southern Asia,” NASA said releasing a picture of India on this Diwali night.

“The image is based on data collected by the VIIRS ‘day- night band’, which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared. The image has been brightened to make the city lights easier to distinguish,” it said.

NASA said most of the bright areas in the imagery released by it are cities and towns in India. “India is home to more than 1.2 billion people and has 30 cities with populations over 1 million,” it said.

Cities in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan are also visible near the edges of the image.

“An image that claims to show the region lit for Diwali has been circulating on social media websites and the Internet in recent years. In fact, it does not show what it claims.

That image, based on data from the Operational Linescan System flown on US Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites, is a colour—composite created in 2003 by NOAA scientist Chris Elvidge to highlight population growth over time,” NASA said.

“In that image, white areas show city lights that were visible prior to 1992, while blue, green, and red shades indicate city lights that became visible in 1992, 1998, and 2003 respectively,” it said.

“In reality, any extra light produced during Diwali is so subtle that it is likely imperceptible when observed from space,” NASA said.

Asteroid to pass near Earth on Feb 15

An asteroid, the size of a city block, will squeeze by Earth’s atmosphere and the geostationary satellites orbiting the planet in February, scientists have revealed.

It will be the closest fly by in history and many international leaders in asteroid and comet research will gather at the University of Central Florida in Orlando Friday, Feb. 15, for a special “viewing party” to watch the asteroid 2012 DA14 zipping between Earth and orbiting communication satellites (within 14,000 miles of Earth).

Experts say there is no chance the asteroid will hit Earth -- this time.

But with more than 4,700 asteroids NASA has identified as potential threats to Earth, some as big as 16 football fields, these objects are getting a lot of attention.

Humberto Campins, a UCF physics professor who led the first team to discover water ice on an asteroid in 2010, said the asteroids provide clues to the early formation of the solar system and should interest the entire community because they can be hazards as well as resources.

Should an asteroid be detected on a collision course with Earth, it will be critical to know its composition and structure in order to deflect it. The impact of a small asteroid like DA14 would equal the destructive power of an atomic bomb. A larger asteroid could be catastrophic.

That’s why Campins and the planetary scientists at UCF organized this free viewing party and invited leaders in asteroid research to speak to the public about the reality and myths of these ancient rocks on Feb. 15. UCF and the Florida Space Institute are sponsoring this event.

Confirmed speakers include Dr. Michael F. A’Hearn, the scientist who led NASA’s Deep Impact mission, which launched the first man-made object into the nucleus of a comet, and Dr. Harold Reitsema, a former NASA scientist who is part of the B612 Foundation’s (http://b612foundation.org) private effort to launch a telescope that will locate and track asteroids that could hit Earth.

The scientists will talk about why asteroid research is so vital to Earth and the new NASA and private efforts to track them.

The public also will get a chance to see the fly-by through exclusive live feeds from telescopes in La Sagra and Tenerife, Spain, where the astronomers who first discovered DA14 will be tracking it..

Live feeds from Majorca and other observatories are also planned. Astrophysicist and asteroid expert Dr. Javier Licandro, of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canaries in Tenerife, Spain, also will provide some commentary.

Memory loss not only a problem of elders

A recent study has suggested that Memory loss is not just a matter of old age but can begin as early as our thirties. However, the average age of memory loss was found 57.
In an online poll conducted in Britain, 11 percent of the total people interviewed said they experienced a memory loss in their 40s. However, 6 percent responded that they noticed it in their 30s.
The survey also found that people over-50s are often suffer the fear of memory loss and many have frequent and embarrassing memory lapses, the Daily Mail reported Friday.
The most common examples of memory loss included getting out of the house without wearing socks, forgetting how to spell common words like "hour" and even struggling to remember their own name at times.
The research also revealed that, 92 percent of total participants over-50s do try to keep their minds and memory active. The survey was commissioned by an adult learning website Love to Learn.

NASA launches new service to text alert people to see Space Station in sky

In a new service launched by NASA, people will receive text messages when the International Space Station will come over their house. Until now, most of the people are unaware of the location of the ISS even though ISS is the third brightest objective present in the sky after the sun and the moon.
Until now, most of the people are unaware of the location of the ISS even though ISS is the third brightest objective present in the sky after the sun and the moon.
But with the launch of NASA?s new Spot the Station service, people get the information about where to look and would be able to see it easily - even without a telescope.
The service has been launched in order to celebrate the 12th anniversary of crews residing and working aboard the station.
"It's really remarkable to see the space station fly overhead and to realize humans built an orbital complex that can be spotted from Earth by almost anyone looking up at just the right moment," the Daily Mail quoted William Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator for human exploration and operations, as saying.
"We're accomplishing science on the space station that is helping to improve life on Earth and paving the way for future exploration of deep space," he added.
