After a number of trials, we at .radar measured the 3.6 m x 3.6 m prototype of 9 panel planar reflect array antenna of our first spaceborne SAR mission. Sometimes, just numbers do not register the size of the antenna in our visualisation. You may think of 4 double beds are spread side by side in a square arrangement – that is the size of the antenna. This is the largest reflect array and probably the only one built in India. We are very satisfied with the antenna performance and smooth operation of our NF test facility.

The measurement was faced with a number of puzzling results, spread over almost two weeks. We analysed all these results to improve our understanding of the NF interactions of the probe antenna with the reflect array feed structure elements. We never anticipated this issue to challenge us. We satisfactorily resolved the issue, as evident in the final results.

As we move towards the realisation of our ambitious goal of launching our L band SAR satellite, we are reminded of the wisdom of Mark Twain: If you hold a cat by the tail, you learn things you cannot learn any other way.

After a number of trials, we at Sisir Radar measured the 3.6 m x 3.6 m prototype of 9 panel planar reflect array antenna of our first spaceborne SAR mission. Sometimes, just numbers do not register the size of the antenna in our visualisation. You may think of 4 double beds are spread side by side in a square arrangement – that is the size of the antenna. Simple is Elegant

In Sisir Radar, we strive for simplifying the process of building our space borne or drone borne SAR hardware and measurement systems. We have just unveiled our new Near Field (NF) measurement system on our terrace. It is a unique facility with horizontal scanning over 5 m x 5 m scan area, enables zero g deployment of our spaceborne SAR payload very simple. Moreover, we do not need elaborate MW absorber cocoon to make the measurement. Complete mechanical structure and control system were built inhouse. The structure is very light, dismantleable and reintegrable at a very very short notice.

We measured the 1.2 m x 1.2 m prototype centre panel of our 9 panel planar reflect array antenna of our first spaceborne SAR mission and the results are presented alongwith. We are very satisfied with the antenna performance and smooth operation of our facility. Our NF processing algorithm is unique in the world, which can extract exact phase correction profile implemented in the reflect array. Undoubtedly, a first of its kind of solution to debug any deviation from design to implementation for evolving reflect array antenna technology.
