Incorporated in 1985 under the Companies Act, 1956, WBPDCL has an employee strength of around 5000 and an annual turnover in the region of Rs.5800 crores.

The West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL) is the largest state owned power generating company in the eastern region of India and meets around 60% of the state's power demands. With a primary objective to provide quality power to meet industrial, agricultural, and domestic needs in the state of West Bengal, our vision is to be the best power generating company in the country. WBPDCL has a current installed capacity of 3860 MW and meets around 60% of the total power demand of the state, and aims to increase it in the days to come. The existing power plants of WBPDCL are located in Bakreswar, Bandel, Kolaghat, Sagardighi, and Santaldih. WBPDCL has been the recipient of various awards like the Silver Shield National Award for Meritorious Performance in Power Sector from the Ministry of Power, Government of India, and the Meritorious Award from the Central Electricity Authority, for its excellent performance, peak generation, plant load factor, low specific oil consumption, and ash utilization.
