On 01-06-2025, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kupwara organized an awareness programme under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan to educate farmers on balanced fertilizer use, soil health management, and sustainable agricultural practices. KVK Kupwara Organizes Mega Awareness-cum-Training Programme at Border Area Machil
Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kupwara in collaboration with Division of Olericulture, Faculty of Horticulture, SKUAST-K organized a comprehensive awareness cm training programme on vegetable cultivation, potato production, vermicomposting, and natural farming at the far flung border area of Machil, Kupwara.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation of around 300 farmers, including youth and women farmers. During the event, 70 quintals of quality potato seed, vermicompost units, plastic buckets, and seeds of 16 vegetable varieties were distributed among farmers to promote scientific farming, kitchen gardening, and nutritional security.
Dr. G. M. Bhat, Head KVK Kupwara, emphasized the importance of sustainable farming, vermicomposting, and natural farming for improving soil health, reducing cultivation costs, and enhancing rural livelihoods in remote border areas. Dr. Ashfaq Abidi delivered expert guidance on scientific potato cultivation, while Dr. Faheema highlighted modern vegetable production and management practices. Dr. Ummia Masoodi stressed the role of scientific agriculture in livelihood generation and rural employment.
Scientists from SKUAST-K and KVK Kupwara also interacted with farmers and encouraged youth to adopt modern agriculture and vegetable farming as sustainable entrepreneurial ventures.
The programme was organized under the guidance of the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-K, and Director Extension SKUAST -K with the objective of extending scientific agricultural technologies to farmers residing in remote border areas. Farmers appreciated the efforts of SKUAST-K and KVK Kupwara for providing quality inputs and expert guidance at their doorstep.

🌱🍄 KVK Kupwara Organizes Training-cum-Awareness Programme on Mushroom Cultivation at Bandi Monbal🍄🌱

Under the visionary guidance of Raihana Habib Kanth, Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kupwara organized a highly interactive Training-cum-Awareness Programme on Mushroom Cultivation at Bandi Monbal on 15th May 2026 with the aim of promoting mushroom cultivation as a sustainable and income generating enterprise among rural farming communities, particularly farm women.
Addressing the participants, Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth emphasized the importance of diversification in agriculture and encouraged farmers to adopt innovative agri based enterprises for ensuring sustainable livelihoods and economic stability. She appreciated the enthusiastic participation of rural women and reaffirmed the commitment of SKUAST-K towards the welfare, empowerment, and upliftment of the farming community through continuous extension and capacity building programmes.
Earlier, G. M. Bhat highlighted the immense scope of mushroom cultivation as a low investment and high-return enterprise capable of transforming the socio-economic conditions of rural households. He stated that mushroom farming has emerged as a promising avenue for self employment and entrepreneurship, especially for women and unemployed youth. He further added that the agro-climatic conditions of Kupwara are highly suitable for mushroom cultivation and encouraged farmers to adopt scientific production techniques for better productivity and profitability. Prof. Bhat also stressed the importance of skill development, awareness, and regular technical guidance in promoting sustainable mushroom based enterprises in the district. He reiterated that KVK Kupwara remains fully committed to providing technical support, training, and handholding assistance to farmers for the promotion of innovative and profitable agricultural ventures.
During the technical session, Vikas Gupta delivered an informative lecture on scientific mushroom cultivation and elaborated on various aspects including cultivation practices, crop management, value addition, and economic benefits associated with mushroom farming. The participants actively interacted with the experts and showed keen interest in adopting mushroom cultivation as an additional livelihood option. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 100 farm women, making the event highly successful and impactful. Teaching and non-teaching staff of KVK Kupwara were also present on the occasion.

Today, an awareness-cum-demonstration programme on the Balanced Use of Fertilizers for Sustainable Agriculture was successfully conducted at Jumagund, Kupwara under the dynamic leadership and guidance of Dr. G. M. Bhat, Head, KVK Kupwara. During the programme, farmers were sensitized about the importance of judicious and balanced application of fertilizers to improve soil health, crop productivity, and environmental sustainability. Interactive discussions were held regarding integrated nutrient management and the efficient use of organic and inorganic fertilizers in present-day farming systems.On the occasion, some important medicinal plants from the area were also collected for demonstration and educational purposes to create awareness among farmers regarding their identification, cultivation, and medicinal value.The programme was attended by both the scientific and non-teaching staff of KVK Kupwara along with active participation from local farmers, making the event highly interactive and informative.

Today, under the dynamic leadership and guidance of Dr. G. M. Bhat, a valuable collection of important medicinal and aromatic plant species was carried out from different forest ranges of the Langate Forest Division for research and demonstration purposes at KVK Kupwara.
The collected species include:
• Inula racemosa (Pushkarmool)
• Saussurea costus (Kuth)
• Bergenia ciliata (Zakhmi Hayat)
• Acorus calamus (Wai Gunder)
• Mentha arvensis (Pudhina)
• Artemisia annua (Tethwan)
Such initiatives strengthen research activities related to medicinal plants and help in conservation, documentation, and promotion of the rich biodiversity of the region.

SKUAST-Kashmir’s flagship Student Rural Exploration Program (SREP), a first of its kind initiative in India, was successfully conducted in Donwari village of Wavoora Block, Kupwara by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kupwara.
Under the mentorship of Dr. G.M. Bhat, Head KVK KUPWARA/Mentor of SREP Kupwara, along with Mr. Wajid Meerak, Farm Manager, student teams carried out a comprehensive door to door survey covering different land use systems, fertilizer usage, poultry farming, apiculture, vermicompost preparation, animal rearing, and other allied agricultural activities.
The interaction focused on identifying the problems faced by farmers and providing practical scientific solutions for improving productivity, sustainability, and livelihood opportunities.
The program reflects SKUAST-Kashmir’s commitment towards connecting students with rural communities and promoting sustainable agricultural development through field based learning and grassroots engagement.

An Input Distribution-cum-Training Programme was successfully organized by Division of Vegetable Science, SKUAST-K in collaboration with KVK Kupwara at Hatchmarg, Kupwara under ICAR-Tribal Sub Plan. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from local farmers and stakeholders.
During the event, Dr. G.M. Bhat appreciated the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor SKUAST-K for his continuous support and commitment towards the welfare and upliftment of farmers of Kupwara district. He also emphasized the importance of adopting natural farming techniques for preserving soil health and promoting sustainable agriculture practices among farming communities.
Prof. Ishfaq A. Abidi, Head, Division of Vegetable Science, SKUAST-K, highlighted the importance of scientific vegetable cultivation, use of quality seed material and adoption of improved production technologies to enhance farmers’ income and productivity. He encouraged farmers to remain connected with SKUAST-K for technical guidance and awareness regarding modern agricultural practices.
Ex-Director Agriculture Mr. Iqbal Choudhary, Nodal Officer Seed, stressed the significance of quality seeds and timely input management for achieving better crop yield. He also advised farmers to adopt integrated and sustainable farming approaches for long-term agricultural development in the region.
The programme was also attended by Dr. Asma Amin and Dr. Mudasir Ahmed Magray. The event focused on farmer awareness, sustainable vegetable cultivation practices and distribution of quality inputs among beneficiaries.

The Division of Genetics & Plant Breeding, SKUAST-K in collaboration with KVK Kupwara today organized a programme on “Fodder Seed Kits, Demonstration and Training” under HADP Fodder (P-28) – Development of Fodder Resources for UT of J&K at KVK Kupwara.
The programme was graced by Prof. Shakeel Ahmed, Dean FOA Wadura SKUAST-K, and Prof. Asif Bashir (Division of Genetics and Plant breeding) who highlighted the importance of quality fodder production and scientific interventions for strengthening the livestock sector in the region.
Dr. G.M. Bhat welcomed the participants and emphasized the role of KVK in promoting improved fodder technologies among farming communities. Prof. Shahid Ahmed Hakeem deliberated on soil health management and scientific fodder cultivation practices for sustainable agriculture.
The programme was organized under the guidance of Dr. Raihana Habib Kanth and the dynamic leadership of the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai.
Farmers participated enthusiastically and were sensitized about improved fodder varieties, and were provided with fooder seed kits and modern fodder production technologies aimed at enhancing livestock productivity and farmers’ income.
