Our Managing Director, Dave Ellis MEng, is a proud University of Plymouth alumnus and is passionate about supporting the next generation of civil engineers. Having studied there himself, Dave understands the importance of encouraging new talent into the industry.

Last week, Dave spent the day back at the University in his role on the Industry Advisory Committee and also helped judge the Dissertation Poster Exhibition from the final-year BEng Civil Engineering students.

We were delighted to sponsor the Best Project in Practical Engineering award, which Dave presented to Matt Zielinski for his poster “Assessment of Structural Failure Modes of Historic Blockwork Coastal Defences”, which was a refreshing and thoughtful approach of simple assessment methods of an aging asset in an ever more complicated and evolving industry. It was a fantastic event, and congratulations to all the students who exhibited. The standard of work on display was exceptionally high.

Our Managing Director, Dave Ellis, was delighted to accept the Community Business of the Year 2026 award on Monday, presented by Chudleigh Town Council. This recognition was completely unexpected and is sincerely appreciated by everyone at Bridge Civil Engineering.

The award reflects our continued commitment to supporting Chudleigh and its local initiatives over the past 12 months, including:
• Sponsoring the Chudleigh Under 14s Football Team
• Installing the disabled lift socket at the community swimming pool
• Facilitating a road closure for the Cystic Fibrosis and Rowcroft Charity Day
• Topsoiling the Culver Park wildflower area
• Making safe the Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) following vandalism
• Positioning sheep planters around the town
• Sponsoring a sheep planter for the year as part of the sheep project
• Completing repairs to the community swimming pool slabbed area

As highlighted by Chudleigh Town Council, Bridge Civil Engineering Ltd is proud to be recognised as a hard‑working, reliable and community‑minded business, and we are honoured that our contribution to the town has been acknowledged in this way.

We look forward to continuing our support for the community in which we are based and to working alongside local organisations to help Chudleigh thrive.

Successful completion of works in Camborne, including the removal of existing structures and construction of a new reinforced concrete base for new National Grid structures.

The scope of works included excavation, formation preparation, reinforcement installation and the accurate setting of holding‑down bolt assemblies, positioned and checked by the BCEL Site Engineering team prior to the concrete pour.

Works were delivered by BCEL and our subcontractors on a 7‑day working basis to meet programme requirements and successfully complete the works during an NGED outage.

A strong team effort throughout, delivered safely, on time and to specification

Last week saw great progress on the Glenholt SPS project, with the team completing several key elements of the storm tank and embankment works.
We’ve installed the storm tank pipe sections, set the rising main and washwater pipework on concrete beds, and constructed the reinforced concrete staircase bases on the embankment. All works have been delivered safely and in line with programme despite challenging ground conditions, significant rock excavation and heavy rainfall.

We would also like to acknowledge Tilbury Douglas for taking the time to recognise the team’s efforts on site. Their feedback and the milestone breakfast to mark the installation of the 4th storm tank pipe were well received by the workforce. We’re lucky to work with a number of clients who value the teams on the ground, and it’s always appreciated when that support is shown during the job.

Good progress overall and a solid platform for the next phase of work.

Great progress at the Mid Devon Waste Transfer Station, where the team has been working through the early drainage stages exactly to programme.

So far we’ve:
• Mobilised on site and completed the enabling and site‑clearance works
• Set out and constructed the first drainage chamber
• Installed the first sections of 150mm drainage pipework feeding into the new system
• Excavated, installed and placed the concrete surround to the cesspool tank
• Constructed the next drainage chamber further along the line
• Installed the washdown separator, including excavation, base pour, tank placement and full concrete surround
• Connected the separator into the new drainage run leading towards the H2GO kerb detail
• Installed the rainwater tank and placed the concrete surround

Throughout these works, our engineering team has carried out level checks and quality inspections at every stage to ensure all drainage lines, chambers and tanks are installed exactly to design.

A strong start from the team, and the new drainage network is beginning to take shape well.

National Apprenticeship Week 2026 has been a good reminder of how important apprenticeships are to our business.

We now have 12 apprentices and former apprentices within the team, all building their careers through hands‑on experience and structured training.

Apprenticeships remain one of the best ways into the industry, and we’re really starting to see the benefits of investing in younger people across our sites and teams.

Mental health continues to have a profound impact across the construction industry, and it’s something we take seriously.

To support our teams, every one of our sites has a dedicated Mental Health First Aider in place. In addition, 62% of our workforce have completed training to recognise the early signs of mental health issues and to respond with confidence and care.
