Today's is World Environment Day. I heartily wish to gather our society on one platform to conserve, protect and sustain our most valuable Environment.
Today, I want to ask one question.... " What is contemporary cause of Pollution and Environmental Degradation???"
90% of us would say "PLASTIC." so today I want to end up this false notion. Plastic isn't a problem, the problem is our disposable culture, the problem is unplanned, uncalculated and misbehaved exploitation of plastic. If we look at what plastic have done to save and conserve this environment and biodiversity of our planet, we will never accuse it to be guilty for this global climatic alteration.for ex.
1. To produce a ton of paper cost 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 4000 kilowatt energy, 7000 gallons of water.
2. Plastic has replaced use of wood and other metals at greater extent.
3. Plastic has replaced ivory and tortoiseshell that were used in manufacturing jewelry, combs, buttons etc.
And if we blame plastic only for its much slower decompostion process. we have to also consider decomposition rate of other materials also
disposable diapers- 250-500 years
sanitary pads- 500-800 years
aluminum cans- 80-200 years
glass- millions of years
In world of nearly seven billion souls and counting, we are not going to feed, cloth and house ourselves solely from wood, ore and stone; we need plastics. And in era when we're concerned about carbon foot print, we can appreciate that light weight plastics take less energy to produce and transport than many other materials. Plastics also make possible green technology like solar panels and lighter cars and planes that burns less fuel. These "unnatural" synthetics, intelligently deployed, could turn out to be nature's best ally.
Hence, We can't hope to achieve plastic's promise of 21st century by sticking with 20th century habits of production and consumption. We need to Re-think Plastic.
On this day let's promise ourselves " To use plastic and other products wisely, intelligently and meaningfully and protect mother Earth."
