A 20Year Solar Investment Opportunity You Can’t Miss

I was on a zoom with a group of middle east investors explaining the model of investment in . There are diversifying their investment towards solar energy. One of the questions they had was, “How do you ensure consistent returns over the period of 20 years?”

That’s when I shared our Virtual Net Metering (VNM) model for housing societies in Maharashtra.

Here’s how it works:

Investor Role: You fund a ground mounted offsite solar plant.
Housing Society Role: They sign a legally binding agreement to purchase solar power.
Residents Benefit: Enjoy up to 50% discount on their electricity bills.
Investor Returns: Targeting \~16% post-tax IRR over 20 years with predictable cash flows.

And we as the developers will create a most efficient solar plant, maintain it for 20 years and also do all the operations, maintenance, billing, co-coordinating with DISCOM and ensure the guaranteed return on your investment!

Why this is truly attractive:

Long term security: Fixed agreements with society resolutions.
Scalable & efficient: Offsite plants → larger capacity → lower cost per unit.
Transparent & MERC compliant: Billing and crediting mechanism ensures clarity.
Policy backed growth: Renewable energy market is booming, government incentives favorable.

Key Takeaway:
Investing here means powering communities, reducing carbon footprint, and earning sustainable, predictable returns — a rare trifecta in today’s energy market.

Opportunity:
Join a growing network of investors funding solar plants that benefit society residents and the planet.

Why Virtual Net Metering is a Game Changer for Housing Societies

Last Sunday, I visited a 120 flat society in Pune. The residents were eager to adopt solar power, they approached many installers but the society members were not agreeing as the rooftop on the buildings was not sufficient even to generate 50% of the solar power required for the common amenities of the society!

“There’s simply not enough space to convince the members!” the secretary sighed.

Just to catch up, Virtual net metering is a disruptive concept where a housing society and its individual flat owners can now avail solar energy without using the rooftop !

Your society can set up an offsite solar plant and share credits among all residents. The electricity credits are then shared across all flat owners. Each flat owner sees direct reductions in their MSEDCL bill. Even if your rooftop is too small, everyone benefits equally. And yes — credits roll over month-to-month, giving flexibility in consumption.

With MERC’s 2024 amendment, this model is no longer just an idea — it’s a scalable, practical solution for urban India.

Instead of worrying about rooftop space, societies can now think bigger: community solar plants that deliver equal benefits to all.

So, if your society has 50+ members, maybe it’s time to ask the most important question:

“Why aren’t we on VNM yet?”

Credit Rollover in Virtual Net Metering — A Story Every Housing Society Should Know

Last week, one of our existing customers from a Thane housing society called me with excitement:

“Jay, we are seriously planning to go for Virtual Net Metering. In our last committee meeting there was a question about what happens if we generate more solar power than we consume in a month? Do we lose it?”

I smiled. “No, you don’t lose it. Under Maharashtra’s Virtual Net Metering (VNM) policy, your unused credits roll over to the next month — and they keep rolling, month after month, till March!”

Just to catch up, Virtual net metering is a disruptive concept where a housing society and its individual flat owners can now avail solar energy without using the rooftop !

Your society can set up an offsite solar plant and share credits among all residents. Each flat owner sees direct reductions in their MSEDCL bill. Even if your rooftop is too small, everyone benefits equally.

Back to my friend’s story:

“So what happens at the end of March?” he asked.

“Well,” I explained, “any leftover credits that you couldn’t use get settled in cash at MERC’s Average Power Purchase Cost (APPC) — usually ₹3–4 per unit. That’s why the smartest move is to consume as much of your own solar as possible.”

Key takeaway for societies:

Monthly rollover = flexible savings

Year end settlement = financial security

Best benefit = maximizing in-house consumption

Housing societies that plan well unlock transparent, reliable, and long term savings.

Let’s make our societies solar-smart and future-ready!

Team, Exciting News! India & UAE to be Connected by Undersea HVDC Power Cable
1. India and the UAE have signed a joint venture agreement to build an undersea high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission cable as part of the "One Sun One World One Grid" (OSOWOG) initiative.
2. The cable will span approximately 1,400km between Gujarat, India and the UAE, transmitting up to 2GW of renewable energy beneath the Arabian Sea at depths over 3,000 meters.
3. This $5 billion+ project aims to enhance energy security and grid stability by allowing both countries to balance electricity demand and supply—especially sharing India's surplus green energy during UAE's peak needs.
4. The project is expected to set a new global benchmark for sustainable infrastructure and facilitate the integration of more renewable energy sources across borders.
5. Completion is targeted within six years, positioning India as a pioneer in exporting clean energy and leading climate action on a global scale.
6. Proud moment for all working towards a greener tomorrow—let’s keep pushing boundaries!
