Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API)

A pharmaceutical drug is composed of 2 components, the first is the actual also known as which is central/main ingredient since it is biologically/chemically active, it has a direct effect on the illness, syndrome etc. and it is meant to produce desired effect in the body. The second is known as an which is the substance of the tablet or liquid in which the API is suspended or combined with, thus the excipients are the inert or inactive substances that are present inside a drug.

In some cases certain API’s are not known & therefore it may require some additional substances which can work in conjunction with API to produce the required medicinal effect. This generally happens with , where the API is usually a combination of several substances.

In case of there are no biologically/chemically active ingredients, since their list of ingredients include the original ingredients used in their preparation.

Manufacturer usually sets certain standards or benchmarks in order to find out the relative strength of API present inside a medicine or a drug. However the methods of standardising the strength of API differs from manufacturer to manufacturer or from one brand to another

The growth in the new medical technologies, along with the increased importation of raw material ingredients are spurring the demand for the API.

According to , “ & supply more than 40% of APIs used in pharmaceutical products that are sold in United States". Within next 10 years these 2 countries will supply 80% of United States Pharmaceuticals’ API.

Catalogue Number (CAT No.)

refers to a serial number of the products which are mentioned in the Catalogue/Price List of a particular Make or Brand.

In the chemical industry every chemical is available in different makes or brand and it has a different . for every available make. For Instance a chemical product named Benzalkonium Chloride Solution which is available in various different makes such as , , , etc. has a different CAT No. for every different make i.e CAT No. for the above mentioned product in the Price List of MERCK is 61795805001730, in the Price List of ALFA AESAR is B20760, It would be something else in the price lists of LOBA & SD FINE and so on.

There is also a possibility that the CAT Nos. of the product may change on revision of Price Lists.

What is the difference between Catalogue Number ans CAS Registry Numbers?

CAT No. of a particular product differs according to the Make or Brand. It is also subject to the Price Lists Revision.

Where as the CAS Registry Number of a Chemical remains Permanent irrespective of the Make Or Brand Or Price Lists Revision

Chemical Abstract Service Registry Number (CAS Registry Number)

Registry Number are unique numerical identifiers that are assigned by the Chemical Abstract Service to every chemical described in the open scientific literature.

CAS Registry Numbers are used to find out a particular chemical product, it’s Properties, COAs, Availability, Prices, Packaging and much more.

Every chemical hold its separate and unique CAS Registry number. A number which belongs to a particular chemical cannot be repeated or used to describe some other chemical.

It has no inherent meaning but it is assigned in sequential, increasing order when the substance is identified by Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) Scientist for the inclusion in the CAS registry database.

Chemical Abstract Service Registry Number is separated by hyphens into 3 parts, the first part consists upto 7 digits, second part consists of 2 digits, and the third part consisting of atleast a single digit which serves as a check digit.

Below mentioned are the names of some and their Or

• - (CAS No.: 7732-18-5)
• - (CAS No.: 7785-23-1)
• Gold (II) Telluride - (CAS No.: 37043-71-3)
• - (CAS No.: 10294-34-5)
• - (CAS No.: 12046-08-1)
• Bismuth (III) Subnitrate - (CAS No.: 1304-85-4)
• - (CAS No.: 471-34-1)
• - (CAS No.: 7647-14-5)
• Terbium (II) Fluoride - (CAS No.: 107949-15-5)
• - (CAS No.: 12143-02-1)

There are certain chemicals whose CAS Registry Numbers may have more than 1 Digit in its Third Part (Check Digit)

Material Safety Data Sheet ( )

MSDS intends to provide the workers with the procedures for handling or working with a chemical product in a safe manner. It also includes the information which are related to a chemical product such as chemical properties like flash point, melting & point, reactivity, , health effects, first aid, , disposal, storage etc.

It also shows the relating to a particular product such as European Union Standard Black Diagonal Cross on an orange background which denotes that the product is very harmful. There are various other hazardous symbols for chemicals that are , , , dangerous for environment.

The format of MSDS can differ within a country depending upon the national requirements.

Currently it follows a 16 section format which complies with the requirements of Regulation (EC) No.1907/2006. It is also internationally agreed for the substances especially, followed by an annexure that contains the exposure scenarios of that particular substance.

MSDS is also available in an official language of the member nations or states where the product is placed in the market.

Certificate Of Analysis. (COA)

Certificate of Analysis provides all the Technical Details about a particular Chemical Product,
giving the end user confidence that whether the product is fit for the consumption or not.

The details mentioned in the COA regarding a chemical product would be Name of the chemical as well as Name of the Manufacturer or Make or Brand,
Chemical Abstract Service Registry Number (CAS No.), Catalogue Number (CAT No.),
Lot/Batch Number, Chemical Properties like molecular Formula, Molecular Weight, solubility, viscosity and much more.

What is the difference between Certificate of Analysis and Specification sheet?

A very major thing that seperates the COA form the Specification sheet is the LOT/BATCH No. of the chemical product. The COA describes above mentioned qualities of the product with respect to a particular LOT/BATCH No. where as the Specification Sheet describes the Properties and other details of a chemical product In General.
