India’s EV opportunity is increasingly becoming a manufacturing story.

Growing electric vehicle sales are only one part of the transition. The bigger industrial opportunity lies inside the vehicle — batteries, traction motors, battery management systems, inverters, power electronics and other critical components.

India’s EV components market stood at around ₹410 billion in 2025 and is projected to expand at about 38% CAGR through 2032. Yet localisation across several critical EV components remains limited, highlighting both a challenge and a major opportunity for Indian manufacturers.

The next phase of India’s electric mobility journey will therefore depend on deeper localisation, stronger R&D, technology ownership, resilient supply chains and the ability to manufacture critical systems at scale.

Digital transformation delivers greater value when it starts with the right problems.

For chemical manufacturers, the journey towards smarter and more autonomous operations does not necessarily require replacing existing infrastructure. Identifying high-impact areas and progressively integrating automation, AI, advanced analytics and IIoT can deliver measurable improvements while creating a foundation for future growth.

G Balaji, Senior Vice President – Energy Industries, ABB India, discusses how extended automation, predictive technologies, cybersecurity and digital twins are reshaping chemical manufacturing.

As plants become increasingly connected, the opportunity is shifting from simply controlling operations to making them more predictive, adaptive and intelligent.

Can chemical plants move from automation to truly autonomous operations?

According to Swapnil Deosthali, Executive VP and Head – Digital Industries, Siemens India, Industrial AI will be a critical part of that journey.

The shift requires much more than adding AI on top of existing systems. Manufacturers need to connect the physical and digital worlds through automation, IIoT, digital twins, integrated engineering and AI-driven analytics — while focusing on high-impact applications that deliver measurable business value.

In conversation with Rakesh Rao, Deosthali discusses the roadmap towards autonomous chemical plants, decarbonisation, brownfield modernisation, workforce capabilities and why digital transformation need not mean a costly ‘rip-and-replace’ approach.
