President Dr Mohamed Muizzu inspects ongoing work at the Thilamalé Bridge project site to review its latest progress. Set for completion within 2027, the 6.74 km Greater Malé Connectivity Project (GMCP) will link Malé, Villimalé, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi through a bridge and causeway network boosting trade, connecting communities, and easing travel.

Workers placed the final segment connecting Malé and Vilimalé on Saturday, marking a significant step forward for the Greater Malé Connectivity Bridge project.
 
The Ministry of Housing shared the progress on social media, with photos of the connected structures. Known officially as the Thilamalé Bridge, the overall project costs roughly $500 million (MVR 6.2 billion) and aims to join Malé, Vilimalé, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi across a seven kilometer stretch.
 
Indian contractor Afcons Infrastructure stated that workers will now focus on putting up safety railings, paving the road with asphalt, and adding final details.
 
However, the company noted these finishing touches will require extra time before vehicles can use the crossing.
 
Once fully operational, the multi-island bridge will boast four driving lanes; two in each direction, alongside a designated footbridge for pedestrians and dedicated channels for essential utility lines like water and electricity.

Big day for Afcons! A landmark milestone has been achieved on the Greater Male Connectivity Project as the final bridge segment connecting Malé with Vilimalé is now in place.

The lifting was witnessed by Mr Ibrahim, State Minister of the Maldives, officials from the High Commission of India, members of the Maldivian media, and Mr Vishwamurthy, Project Director, Afcons.

With the completion of the bridge superstructure, the Greater Male Connectivity Project takes a major step forward in strengthening connectivity and transforming mobility across the Maldives.
