It's high time, we mandate architectural designs for Flyovers and small bridges, (say the work-horse bridges), we encounter everyday on daily commutes within constrained urban conditions in cities like Patna and Solapur.
Flyovers are designed in Solapur not just for Aesthetics. Structural arrangement will be easy for construction, safe and swift within constrained, congested traffic conditions.
Solapur Flyovers bid documents adapted by NHAI are foreseen to be standard flyover solutions for urban constraints of typical Indian cities. We can no longer construct flyovers in cities, with same techniques as in countrysides or rivers, where we have ample space. Or we shall continue to encounter accidents on urban construction sites.
The all-precast structural arrangement in Solapur was achieved by interfacing various faculties to arrive at right solutions - Architecture, Structural & Highway Engineering with Construction expertise.
Solapur bridges are squeezed from all directions. Height curtailed by 2.5m, simply by merging Pier-cap into bridge deck. Thus, slope lengths were saved by 50m each sides.
Foundations sizes are squeezed to minimum, to encroach minimum upon running traffic, saving pain to commuters. Mono-Pile arrangement is ideal, with exceptions of sites with hard rocks. hope we shall soon mobilize more and more of those powerful drills for pile foundations, enough for all urban constructions in India.
Same design solutions were presented last month to resolve stranded Ranchi Flyovers under similar urban constraints.
