The Basic Concept: What is Reverse Osmosis?
To understand Reverse Osmosis, we first need to understand natural Osmosis.

In nature, if you have two solutions of water with different concentrations of salt separated by a semi-permeable membrane, water will naturally flow from the less concentrated side (clean water) to the more concentrated side (salty water) to equalize the balance. This is nature's way of seeking equilibrium.

Reverse Osmosis does the opposite. By applying high pressure to the concentrated side (salty/dirty water), we force the water molecules to move against the natural flow, leaving the salts and impurities behind. The result? Pure, clean water on the other side.

The Step-by-Step Working Process
An industrial RO plant is not just a single filter; it is a sophisticated system of stages. Here is the journey a drop of water takes through the plant:

Step 1: Pre-Treatment (The Protection Phase)
Raw water—whether from a borewell, river, or sea—contains suspended solids, chlorine, and organic matter. If this water hit the delicate RO membrane directly, it would clog or destroy it within hours. Pre-treatment is crucial.

Chlorine Dosing: To kill bacteria and algae.
Media Filtration: Water passes through sand filters to remove large suspended particles and carbon filters to remove chlorine (which damages the membrane).
Micron Cartridge Filter: A final polish filter removes any fine particles larger than 5-10 microns before the water enters the high-pressure pump.

Step 2: The High-Pressure Pump (The Engine)
Once pre-treated, the water enters the heart of the system: the high-pressure pump. This pump applies the necessary force (pressure) required to push the water through the semi-permeable membrane.

Note: The pressure required depends on the salinity of the water. Brackish water requires less pressure than seawater.
Step 3: The Membrane Module (The Separation Phase)
This is where the real work happens. The pressurized water enters the membrane housing.

The Membrane: These are usually spiral-wound elements made of thin-film composite material. The pores are microscopic (0.0001 microns)—so small that only water molecules can pass through.
Separation: As pressure pushes the water, it splits into two streams:
Permeate (Product Water): The pure water that passes through the membrane.
Concentrate (Reject Water): The water containing all the salts, minerals, and impurities that didn't pass through.

Step 4: Post-Treatment (The Polishing Phase)
The permeate water is now 98% to 99% pure. However, it is often slightly acidic and “aggressive“ (corrosive) because all minerals have been removed. Depending on the application, post-treatment may include:

pH Adjustment: Adding lime or caustic soda to neutralize the pH.
Remineralization: Adding essential minerals back in (common for drinking water plants).
UV Disinfection/Ozonation: A final step to ensure no bacteria survived the process, ensuring long-term storage safety.
Step 5: Distribution and Storage
The final purified water is sent to a storage tank, ready for distribution to a municipal tap, a factory boiler, or a bottling line.

Early heat in Bengaluru: Water supply dept identifies 448 stress zones

With temperatures rising earlier than usual in Bengaluru, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has identified 448 high-alert, water-stressed micro-pockets and rolled out a Rs 10.1 crore summer preparedness plan to avert shortages. According to a Times of India report, these vulnerable zones are not entire layouts or colonies but small, concentrated stretches within larger supply areas.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast daytime temperatures in the city to remain between 29°C and 30°C. The early onset of heat has prompted the BWSSB to act sooner than in previous years, when interventions were typically initiated only after complaints began to rise.

Most of the identified pockets are located in the interior parts of north and east Bengaluru, where residents depend heavily on groundwater and borewell sustainability remains uncertain. Officials said these limited clusters could face drinking water stress if groundwater levels decline sharply between March and May. To mitigate this risk, the BWSSB will deploy 1,260 mini water tanks, each with a capacity of 5,000 litres, as decentralised drinking water buffers.

In addition, 117 BWSSB tankers have been earmarked for summer supply. Another 104 private tankers have been empanelled as backup, and around 60 more are being arranged in anticipation of increased demand. Standard BWSSB tankers carry between 6,000 and 12,000 litres.

The Board also plans to set up 91 additional Cauvery water filling points and has arranged filling support for 196 RO plants across the city. Further, 47 water infrastructure works and 14 lake-filling projects are currently under way to strengthen supply during peak summer.

The early preparedness comes amid higher-than-normal February temperatures and uncertainty over groundwater levels. With improved Cauvery supply under the Cauvery Stage V augmentation project, the Board’s total pumping capacity now stands at 773 MLD. Of this, around 400 MLD is currently being utilised, leaving over 40% spare capacity that can be tapped if needed.

Drill a borewell without approval? FIR will be filed, says BWSSB

Drill a borewell without approval? FIR will be filed, says BWSSBThe Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has registered FIRs against individuals involved in illegal borewell drilling in Whitefield. Complaints were filed against landowners and a drilling machine owner for operating without permissions.

In a strong warning against illegal groundwater extraction, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has initiated legal action against those involved in unauthorised borewell drilling in Whitefield. The civic body has made it clear that drilling borewells without official permission will lead to criminal cases.

According to BWSSB officials, FIRs have been registered at the Whitefield Police Station following the detection of illegal borewell activity at two separate locations. The borewells were allegedly drilled without obtaining approval from any concerned government department, in clear violation of existing rules.

Complaints have been filed against Whitefield residents KalaiVani and Pradeep Choudhary, who are accused of allowing borewell drilling on their properties without mandatory permissions. In addition, an FIR has also been registered against Bhaskar, the owner of the borewell drilling machine, for carrying out the work without authorisation.

Officials stated that the accused were reportedly drilling borewells by bypassing departmental oversight. Acting on specific information, BWSSB officers conducted a raid at the locations and confirmed the violations. Following this, formal complaints were lodged against the landowners at the local police station.

The BWSSB reiterated that groundwater is a critical public resource and illegal extraction will not be tolerated. The board has warned that strict action, including FIRs, will continue against anyone found drilling borewells without due approvals.

Bengaluru: What was meant to be a week-long pipeline replacement by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has left commuters on Double Road (KH Road) near the Shanthinagar Bus Station navigating broken pavements and rubble, forcing them onto the busy road and raising safety concerns.

The work to replace ageing water mains in Shanthinagar has disrupted the stretch near the BMTC bus depot service road, leaving footpaths uneven and buried under debris.

Contractors had assured the disruption would last a week, but locals say the but locals say the stretch has remained dug up for months, with little progress on safe pedestrian access.

"With the pavement gone, we have no choice but to walk on the edge of the road," said Suresh Kumar, a senior citizen. “Buses and cars come fast. Every day, it feels like an accident waiting to happen."

A local auto driver said: "It is dangerous during peak hours. People step onto the road without warning. I have had near-misses with two-wheelers trying to overtake."

Meena, who works nearby, said: "I saw an elderly man slip on the rubble and almost fall into the traffic path. There is no safe place to walk. Also, as there is a turn towards the BMTC depot service road after the rubble-strewn stretch, buses enter the road fast and quickly make a turn which might be very dangerous for walkers."

A local traffic policeman at the junction confirmed the risk, noting that while the nearby signal somewhat slows traffic, pedestrians are often forced into harm’s way as they avoid the broken footpaths. "It is very risky and difficult for pedestrians to navigate this path."

With heavy traffic and limited walking space, pedestrians say urgent measures such as temporary walkways and better debris management are needed before a serious accident occurs.

Speaking to DH, Shanthinagar MLA NA Haris promised to check with the authorities and issue instructions to ensure the work is completed as quickly as possible.
