Fort #5 - Shaniwar Wada- Architectural Masterpiece

Built by Peshwai, the leadership of Bajirao I in 1732, Shaniwar Wada is a magnificent seven-story capital building of the Maratha Empire. Initially, it was intended to be a colossal seven-storied palace made of stones. Consequently, after the construction of the base floor, the remaining floors were constructed using bricks. With nine bastions and five gateways, this fort was the center of Indian politics in the 18th century; the change in its status came at the heels of the rise of the Maratha empire. Shaniwar Wada continues to be one of the greatest architectural masterpieces in Indian history.

Fort #4 - Raigad - Crown of Maratha

An epoch-making fort in the history of Maharashtra, Raigad was the capital of the Maratha Empire. The true mastermind behind the Raigad Fort architecture was the visionary architect Hiroji Indulkar. Every nook and cranny of Raigad Fort reflects his architectural expertise. Originally called Rairi, it is wedged on a large chunk of the Sahyadri hill, and detached from the main range by a canyon. The royal coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as the official king of the Maratha Empire was held at Raigad.

Fort #2 - Sinhagad - Gad aala, pan Sinha gela

After scaling a steep cliff and fighting a brutal battle against the Mughals, Kondana Fort was rechristened as Sinhagad remembering the loss of the great Tanaji Malusare. Considered as one of the most important because of its strategic location, the fort is perched on an isolated cliff in Bhuleswar. Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj remorsefully said, “Gad aala, pan Sinha gela” – We won the fort, but lost the lion. This explains the name and its importance in the pages of Maratha history of Battle of Swaraj.

We have all grown up hearing stories of the great Maratha warrior, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s bravery and how he captured and built his own forts. The forts designed by Shivaji were not only legendary architectural masterpieces but they were also indomitable, offering safety and refuge to his kingdom. The art & tradition of building clay forts during Diwali, commonly known as Shivaji Killas, owes its roots to Shivaji’s mastery in the area of fortification, and are built by children in Maharashtra with mud or clay in their homes or premises.

While giving a tribute to Shivaji, children also learn the structures of various forts and the stories associated with them. What better way to teach history and ignite the pride of the rich heritage of our country? Elders play a key role in this while they guide and help the kids select the best design for their mud fort. They also learn things like teamwork, engineering, eye for detail, and defense. Institutes and various educational organizations must pursue and encourage this activity and use it as a tool to inculcate key life skills in children at a very young and impressionable age. Keeping that in mind, Arth Clay has made this kit so as to do its bit in keeping our traditions alive while also making our future generations kinder, smarter & stronger.
