Silicon compounds exhibit excellent properties and unique reactivity, making them widely used not only in materials applications such as silicone resins and rubber materials, but also in organic synthesis. Silanes are a general class of compounds containing Si-H bonds. Owing to their moderate hydride reactivity, they are commonly employed as reagents for hydrosilylation of multiple bonds and for hydrogenation reactions. Silanols are compounds in which a hydroxy group is bonded to silicon. In addition to serving as monomers for silicone resins and as raw materials for silane coupling agents, silanols have recently attracted increasing attention as silyl radical sources in the development of new synthetic reactions.

Silver staining is a commonly-used method for the detection of proteins and DNA in polyacrylamide gels after electrophoresis. In this method, silver ions are bound to proteins and DNA present in the gel and reduced, resulting in stained bands. Silver staining is more sensitive than Coomassie Brilliant Blue (CBB) staining; it can detect down to nanogram amounts of protein.

Polyimide is a generic name of polymers having imide bonds. Typically they have excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance, electrical insulation, and mechanical strength. Moreover, they have a relatively low coefﬁcient of thermal expansion in organic compounds.
