Handling hazardous material of chemical & biological origin is normal for many R&D labs. It also means that spillage accidents are quite normal and require proper safety measures.

General spill absorbents do not satisfy the specific requirements due to various factors such as product dimensions (too big for single use), product material (reactive material), etc. These are some of the areas you need to focus on when choosing a spill solution for your lab.

We have been using old techniques & equipment for spill cleanup without any groundbreaking innovation in terms of methods or materials. For absorbents, we are using polypropylene-based products. Even though new startups are popping up promoting organic sorbents as a sustainable alternative but they are still struggling to become mainstream.

One major problem with them is that it is very difficult to use them in the chemical industry that has the largest share of the absorbent market in terms of utility. The organic material cannot sustain the corrosiveness of the chemicals.

Then there are future materials such as Graphene, showing a lot of promise as a sorbent. Sorbene is trying to fill the innovation gap in the spill industry and has been pushing for cost-effective & sustainable alternatives such as Graphene.
