Honda just made history, not on the road, but in the sky. On June 17, 2025, Honda became Japan’s first private company to successfully launch and land a reusable rocket, according to Japan Daily. The test took place at Honda’s research facility in Taiki Town, Hokkaido, where the rocket reached an altitude of 271.4 meters before making a precise vertical landing just 37 centimeters from its target.
The rocket, developed entirely in-house by Honda’s R&D team, measures 6.3 meters in length and weighs over 1,300 kilograms with fuel, as reported by Honda Global. The test demonstrated several critical technologies essential for reusable spaceflight, including stable flight control during ascent and descent, precision landing using advanced guidance systems, and real-time data collection to refine future designs.
Honda has been working on reusable launch vehicle (RLV) technology since 2021, with the goal of supporting suborbital space missions by 2029. This successful test marks a major step forward, not just for Honda, but for Japan’s growing private space industry. According to Honda Global, the company sees this achievement as part of a broader vision to integrate mobility across land, air, and space. While Honda is best known for its cars and motorcycles, it’s now proving it can compete in the race to space, alongside global aerospace leaders like SpaceX.
