WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2024

In 1972, the UN General Assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day. The first celebration, under the slogan “Only One Earth,” took place in 1973. Over the years, World Environment Day has evolved into a platform to raise awareness about environmental issues such as air pollution, plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, rising sea levels, and food security, among others. Furthermore, World Environment Day helps drive changes in consumption patterns and in national and international environmental policies. The 2024 edition of World Environment Day will focus on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience, under the slogan “Our Land. Our Future”.

NIMS Medicity celebrates World Environment Day with various programs. A seminar was conducted with NIMS College of Nursing students on "Our Earth, Our Future." Dr. Dipu Kumaran, a Ph.D. scientist at the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management, and Dr. Subash Chandra Bose, former Director of the Water Resources Department, environmental scientist, and GIR consultant, were the resource persons. Flash mobs were organized by NIMS College of Nursing and NIMS Valsala Nursing Home at Salphalyam Complex, Palayam, and the Mall of Travancore. Students spoke about protecting and preserving the environment. Mrs. Fathima Minzaj, Executive Director of NIMS Valsala Nursing Home, distributed tree saplings. Nursing students participated in a cleanliness drive and maintained the banana plantation. A poster competition was also held. Kids from NIMS Anne Sullivan Center engaged with World Environment Day by making posters with leaves, sand, paper, and paints, and they also planted tree saplings. NICDS conducted a debate program titled “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.

World Rivers Day 2022

The World Rivers Day is annually celebrated to raise and spread awareness about the role and importance of rivers and other waterways, and the threats that could potentially endanger the waterways around the world, as well as to promote the improved stewardship of all waterways for sustainable development.

The World Rivers Day was first officially held in 2005 and since then it is annually celebrated on the fourth Sunday of every September. The theme for this year’s World Rivers Day is ‘The importance of Rivers to Biodiversity’. The absolute need for rivers to keep any civilization going is the focus of this year’s theme. Not only humans, but rivers keep a wide range of animals and plant a living breathing part of our ecosystem.

Rivers play an important role in ecosystem and are extremely helpful to human life. They are one of the biggest sources of freshwater. Rivers not only provide us with fresh drinking water, but also provide water for domestic needs (e.g., food, energy, recreation, hygiene) and agricultural purposes (e.g, irrigation). They also provide a pathway to enable people and goods to move or transport from place to place.

In recent decades, human activities driven by industrialization and population growth have caused pollution and damage to numerous waterways around the world, particularly in the areas where people regularly use the rivers as a source of water and transport. Virtually, rivers in every country face an array of threats and thus need to be sustainably managed.

Today inaugurated the new project on the occasion of Malayalam new year Chingam 1, the organic farming and banana fabric research centre at the NIMS campus. In this project, recycled water will use for agriculture. The water sources are from the Sewage treatment plant and strain this water through a biofilter, which will be collected on the pond. Later, recycled water from the pond will be utilised for cleaning, flushing, gardening etc. Through recycled water, fresh water consumption can reduce by above 50% at the Nims.

India’s First Integrated Energy Meter System in Renewable Sector

Petronet LNG Ltd (Oil and Gas company formed by the Government of India) officials visited our new solar power plant and studied the new integrated energy meter system which is used for measuring the solar energy generation on NIMS campus. On this occasion, we would like to announce that, it is the first-meter integration project in India and getting the approval of the State Electricity Board. In this project, we used ‘Human Machine Interface - HMI’ and ‘MF meters’ instead of conventional energy meters. The Integrated Energy Meter system will be convenient and greatly useful for integrated micro renewable energy projects to Mega renewable energy projects. We can call this integration system a ‘next-generation meter’. We are extremely thankful to Kerala Electricity Regulatory Commission and KSEB Renewable Energy and Energy Savings (REES) for promoting our integrated energy meter system. Also grateful to KSEB Section, Sub-division and Division, Neyyattinkara, Electrical Circle Kattakada, KSEB Transformers and Meter Repair units (TMR) and KSEB Special Officer Revenue (SOR) for their great support and help to fulfill this wonderful project.
