WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2024
In 1972, the UN General Assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day. The first celebration, under the slogan “Only One Earth,” took place in 1973. Over the years, World Environment Day has evolved into a platform to raise awareness about environmental issues such as air pollution, plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, rising sea levels, and food security, among others. Furthermore, World Environment Day helps drive changes in consumption patterns and in national and international environmental policies. The 2024 edition of World Environment Day will focus on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience, under the slogan “Our Land. Our Future”.
NIMS Medicity celebrates World Environment Day with various programs. A seminar was conducted with NIMS College of Nursing students on "Our Earth, Our Future." Dr. Dipu Kumaran, a Ph.D. scientist at the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management, and Dr. Subash Chandra Bose, former Director of the Water Resources Department, environmental scientist, and GIR consultant, were the resource persons. Flash mobs were organized by NIMS College of Nursing and NIMS Valsala Nursing Home at Salphalyam Complex, Palayam, and the Mall of Travancore. Students spoke about protecting and preserving the environment. Mrs. Fathima Minzaj, Executive Director of NIMS Valsala Nursing Home, distributed tree saplings. Nursing students participated in a cleanliness drive and maintained the banana plantation. A poster competition was also held.
