Breakdown Voltage (BDV) Test – Transformer Oil | Practical Site Insight

Breakdown Voltage (BDV) test is carried out to determine the dielectric strength of insulating oil used in transformers and oil-filled electrical equipment. It indicates the ability of oil to withstand electrical stress without failure.

Test Standard:

As per IS 6792 and IEC 60156, BDV test is conducted using standard test procedures and calibrated equipment.

Test Setup:

Oil sample is filled in a standard test cell with two spherical electrodes having a gap of 2.5 mm. The test kit should be clean, dry, and free from contamination.

Test Procedure:

Voltage is applied at a uniform rate of approximately 2 kV/sec. The voltage is increased until breakdown occurs (spark discharge between electrodes). The value at which breakdown occurs is recorded.

The test is repeated minimum 5 to 6 times, and the average value is taken as final BDV.

Acceptance Criteria (General Practice):

- New Oil: Above 60 kV
- In-Service Oil: Above 40 kV acceptable
- Below 30 kV: Oil condition not acceptable, requires filtration or replacement

Observations from Site Experience:

- Moisture is the primary cause of low BDV
- Improper sample collection leads to incorrect readings
- Air bubbles and suspended particles reduce dielectric strength
- Oil exposed to atmosphere for long duration shows reduced BDV

Precautions:

- Use clean and dry sampling bottles
- Avoid shaking the oil sample
- Ensure electrodes are polished and gap is correctly set
- Maintain proper earthing of BDV test kit
- Test should be conducted in dust-free environment

Corrective Actions:

- Oil filtration using filtration machine
- Vacuum dehydration process
- Regular maintenance and periodic testing

Important Note:

BDV alone is not sufficient to judge oil condition. It should be evaluated along with moisture content, acidity, and dissolved gas analysis (DGA) for accurate assessment.

This test is critical for ensuring reliability, preventing insulation failure, and maintaining operational safety of electrical systems.
