Yesterday we got time to put the first of the new BadAss 62mm motors on the thrust stand to see what these new motors are capable of. This first one is the BA-6230-205Kv model. I must say that I was blown away by the performance of this motor! I initially tried it on 10 and 12 cell power with BadAss 23x8 and 24x8 props. When testing this motor on 12 cells (44.4 volts) with the 23x8 prop we measured the following full throttle performance numbers.
Volts - 44.4
Amps - 96.9
Watts - 4310
RPM - 7854
Thrust - 14,920 grams, 32.9 pounds
Based on the temperature rise of the motor core during the test, the motor was only producing about 70% of its Max power on that prop. So we ran another test on 12 cells with the BadAss 24x8 prop and got these full throttle performance numbers.
Volts - 44.4
Amps - 124.2
Watts - 5504
RPM - 7651
Thrust - 17,644 grams, 38.9 pounds
Based on the temperatures after this test, the motor was running at about 85% of its max rated power. This means that with the right prop, this motor will be capable of producing over 6000 watts of power and make over 40 pounds of thrust. That is the same power level as a DA-70cc twin gas engine!
From what I have seen here, the larger 6245 motors should be equal in power to a twin cylinder 100cc gas engine, so that will open up a lot of doors for powering the big IMAC type planes with electric power. More info will follow as we continue to test these amazing motors!
Just a few notes on the construction of these motors. They are beefy where needed, but still light enough to keep the weight of the plane down to a minimum. The 62mm motors use a 24-slot stator with 28 magnets in the rotor can for monster torque. The main shaft is 12mm in diameter, and is supported at the front end with a 28x12mm bearing and at the back end with a 32x12 bearing, so these things will stand up to the forces generated when snap-rolling a 20+ pound plane while spinning 24 to 30 inch props!
To support these new motors we already have our BadAss Renegade 130 and 160 amp HV ESC's available, and we are getting a batch of larger BadAss wood props made in 25 through 30 inch sizes with 8, 10 and 12 inch pitch available in each size. Big Things are truly happening at BadAss Power Systems and Innov8tive Designs!
