From Concept to Flawless Finish: Solving Complex Laser Welding Challenges for the Motorcycle Industry
Creating a high-quality motorcycle requires an unwavering commitment to detail, especially when it comes to critical components like the fuel tank. We were recently approached by a motorcycle manufacturer to develop a solution for welding fuel tank collars—a task that demands absolute precision to ensure leak-proof, durable and aesthetic welds.
The challenge? Overcoming common issues like zero-gap conditions on complex part geometries and managing porosity caused by protective coatings. A standard welding solution just wouldn't cut it.
Our team at Laser Automation designed and built a bespoke system featuring a 2 kW fiber laser source and a wobbling head integrated with an ABB robot. The system included a dual-station setup with 180° flip fixtures to handle six different part variants seamlessly. Safety and quality were paramount, with a custom-built enclosure and integrated CCTV for monitoring.
The final result was a fully automated system that consistently produces excellent, pore-free, and leak-proof welds, ensuring the highest level of quality and safety for the end product.
