🌞✨ Pune is going to witness the fascinating phenomenon of Zero Shadow Day (ZSD) on May 13, 2026! ✨🌞
During this rare astronomical event, the Sun will align almost directly overhead at the zenith position. As a result, vertical objects such as poles, bottles, and standing objects will cast virtually no shadow for a brief moment! ☀️🌍
🔭 What is Zero Shadow Day?
Zero Shadow Day occurs when the Sun reaches exactly overhead, causing its rays to fall vertically on the Earth’s surface at a 90° angle. This makes the shadow of upright objects disappear temporarily.
📍 This phenomenon can only be observed in regions located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, and many cities in India experience it twice a year.
🌎 Why is it special?
This event beautifully demonstrates:
✨ Earth’s tilt and motion
✨ The apparent movement of the Sun
✨ Real-life astronomy in action
Thousands of years ago, ancient civilizations used shadows and the Sun’s position to measure time, determine directions, and develop calendars.
👀 Try this during the event:
Place a bottle, stick, or any vertical object on the ground and observe how its shadow gradually shrinks and nearly disappears!
🌌 Zero Shadow Day is a perfect reminder that astronomy is not just in telescopes — it is happening right above us every day.
