A CO₂ extraction system is a long-term process investment. But too often, buying decisions are made around throughput numbers and price tags alone.

The real questions begin much earlier.
- Is the system certified for your market?
- Can it maintain process consistency at scale?
- How flexible is the automation?
- What happens after extraction?
- When things go wrong, what kind of technical support actually exists?

Because extraction performance isn’t determined by a single specification sheet, it’s shaped by the system architecture, process controls, post-processing capability, validation support, and the people behind the technology.

Whether you're evaluating your first system or scaling an existing operation, asking the right questions upfront can save months of inefficiency later.

Here are 12 things worth considering before investing in a CO₂ extraction system.

We’re pleased to announce that Deshal Yadav has been promoted to the Assistant Vice President (AVP) – Applications & Chemistry at Buffalo Extraction Systems.

Having joined BES as Lab Manager, Deshal has played an important role in strengthening our applications and laboratory capabilities through a hands-on, process-driven approach to extraction science.

In her revised role, Deshal will lead critical functions across pre-sales technical qualification, client trials, and application development, and end-to-end laboratory operations, helping prospective customers evaluate process fit, validate extraction outcomes, and move from enquiry to implementation with greater technical clarity.

We congratulate Deshal on this milestone and wish her continued success in her new role.

Delicate aromatic compounds are highly sensitive to heat and degradation. Conventional extraction methods can often compromise volatile fractions, leading to altered olfactory profiles, inconsistent batches, or the need for downstream correction.

This is where supercritical CO₂ extraction changes the equation.

From preserving flower-to-source fidelity and reducing solvent dependency to delivering greater batch consistency at scale, CO₂ extraction offers a more controlled path to aromatic precision, especially in high-value botanicals used across flavors and fragrances industry.

In this edition of our Industry Insights series, Rohit Shah explores why extraction method selection directly impacts measurable outcomes in aroma, consistency, and product quality.

Everyone wants to optimize extraction parameters.

Pressure. Temperature. Flow rate.

But what if the biggest variable affecting your yield was decided before the extraction even started?

Particle size plays a far bigger role in extraction efficiency than most operations realise. Too fine, and the packed bed compacts, CO₂ channels rather than contacting the biomass uniformly. Too coarse, and valuable compounds remain locked inside the biomass.

The result? Lower recovery, longer cycle times, and inconsistencies that can’t always be explained by extraction parameters alone.

In this video, Deshal Yadav breaks down why grind protocol isn’t just a preparation step, it’s a process variable that directly influences extraction performance.

Because in supercritical CO₂ extraction, better yields don’t start at the extractor. They start with the biomass preparation.

Watch the full breakdown and tell us, how do you determine the right particle size distribution for your extraction process?

Scaling CO₂ extraction is not a matter of increasing vessel size. The engineering changes at every level.

At lab scale, systems allow short batch cycles, minimal pressure drop and straightforward temperature uniformity. At production scale, systems introduce significantly different flow dynamics, vessel geometry that directly influences extraction kinetics, and CO₂ recycling efficiency that becomes a major cost variable.

Operators who approach scale-up without accounting for these differences often find themselves correcting problems after commissioning, rather than running consistent production from the start.

Buffalo Extraction Systems engineers each scale level with these distinctions built in:
Level 1 10L/15L: Pilot, R&D and product development
Level 2 50L/75L: Mid-scale and commercial entry
Level 3 200L/300L: Full production and continuous operation
The engineering is specific to each level. The extract quality is consistent across all three.
