Astronomers crack 1,000-year-old Betelgeuse mystery with 1st-ever sighting of secret companion

After a long wait, astronomers have finally seen the stellar companion of the famous star Betelgeuse. This companion star orbits Betelgeuse in an incredibly tight orbit, which could explain one of Betelgeuse's longstanding mysteries. The star is doomed, however, and the team behind this discovery predicts that Betelgeuse will cannibalize it in a few thousand years.

We bear the light to conquer the dark. The stars above guide us to our destination.

I had long wanted to capture a frame that tells a story - a frame with meaning. Considering the effort that went into capturing and processing this image, I’m truly happy with the result. It’s also left me feeling inspired and encouraged to create more such meaningful images.

Beloved Moon

Observing the Moon through a telescope is always a fascinating experience.

I recently realized it had been a while since I last captured a detailed image of the Moon - so I decided to revisit it. And as always, the Moon did not disappoint.

This image was created by processing 30 individual frames, stitched together into a three-panel mosaic.
Captured using a Celestron Edge HD 8 telescope, a Sony A7 III camera, and a GSO 2" 2x Barlow lens.

180° Milky Way Panorama - My Largest Image Capture Yet

Story:
This is the largest image I’ve captured so far, taken from the Chiricahua Mountains in Arizona.
Being summer, the off-season at many locations across the state, the campground we stayed at was completely empty. The idea of spending the entire night alone in a dense forest known for black bear activity was a little scary. Thankfully, a family arrived later and set up camp at the adjacent site, it was a huge relief!
But the reward? Absolutely breathtaking views of the night sky. Witnessed the Milky Way arching across the entire horizon, offering a full 180° panoramic view.

Capturing this image wasn’t planned. It was a spontaneous attempt to capture the beautiful scene my eyes were witnessing.

I know, the image is a bit grainy, but honestly, I’m more thrilled about the post-processing journey than the final output itself. It taught me a lot!

Image Details:
• Panorama of 10 images (2 rows of 5 overlapping shots)
• Each of the 5 Milky Way panels is a stack of 8 images (15 seconds exposure each)
• The foreground consists of 5 single exposures (3–5 seconds each)
• Nearly 10 hours spent stitching and processing using GIMP
• Final resolution: 16,000 x 4,500 px
• TIFF file size: 800+ MB | Exported JPEG: 52 MB

अवकाश संशोधनाला नवी दिशा देणारे कोल्हापूर चे सुपुत्रआंतरराष्ट्रीय कीर्तीचे थोर शास्त्रज्ञ जयंतजी नारळीकर याना भावपूर्ण श्रद्धांजली !!💐💐

ज्येष्ठ खगोल शास्त्रज्ञ जयंत नारळीकर यांचं निधन झालंय. वयाच्या 86व्या वर्षी नारळीकर यांनी अखेरचा श्वास घेतलाय. राहत्या घरात झोपेतच नारळीकर यांची प्राणज्योत मालवली. आंतरराष्ट्रीय कीर्तीचे खगोलशास्त्रज्ञ आणि विज्ञान विषयक लेखन करणारे ज्येष्ठ साहित्यिक म्हणून नारळीकरांची ओळख होती. ब्रिटनमधील केंब्रिज विद्यापीठात उच्चशिक्षण घेतलं. मुंबईतील टाटा मूलभूत संशोधन संस्थेच्या खगोलशास्त्र विभागाचे प्रमुख म्हणून पद स्वीकारलं. पुणे येथील आयुका संस्थेचे संचालक म्हणून नारळीकरांची नियुक्त झाली. मराठी विज्ञान साहित्यविश्वात नारळीकरांचा मोलाचा वाटा राहिलाय.

Venus

Unlike Jupiter or Mars, Venus never appears as a fully illuminated bright circle. Being an inner planet — located between Earth and the Sun — we always observe Venus in phases, much like the Moon.

This image was captured on 14th February 2025. It’s a stack of 500 frames, selected from a video containing 5000 frames. I used a Celestron 8" Edge HD Telescope with a QHY462 planetary camera. Processing was done using Autostakkert and GIMP.

I’ve taken a bit of creative liberty to gently illuminate the dark side for visual balance.

प्रतिपदेचा चंद्र/Waxing Crescent next day of the new moon

संत ज्ञानेश्वर माउलींना एकदा एका भक्ताने विचारले की, "माऊली प्रतिपदेचा चंद्र कुठे आणि कसा दिसतो ते कृपया मला सांगा"
ज्ञानेश्वर माऊली म्हणाले - "ते पश्चिमेला लांबवर असणारे आंब्याचे झाड तुला दिसत आहे का? त्याची ती उजवीकडे आलेली, जमिनीला जवळपास टेकत असणारी फांदी दिसतेय?
त्या फांदीच्या शेवटाला असलेली काही पाने आहेत बघ, त्यामध्ये सर्वात उजवीकडच्या पानाचे जे टोक आहे, तिथेच तुला प्रतिपदेचा चंद्र दिसेल."

थोडक्यात काय तर प्रतिपदेचा चंद्र दिसणे म्हणजे अगदी दुर्मिळ गोष्ट.
हा फोटो मी आज गुढीपाडव्याच्या संध्याकाळी फिनिक्स ऍरिझोना येथून काढला आहे.
