Indoor Landscaping Looks Good… But Grows Only with the Right Light

Modern indoor landscaping is not just about aesthetics—it is about plant survival and growth.

Most indoor spaces lack sufficient natural sunlight. Without the right light spectrum and intensity, plants struggle to grow and maintain quality.

Advanced plant lighting solutions play a critical role:

• Deliver required spectrum for photosynthesis
• Ensure uniform and healthy growth
• Reduce plant replacement and maintenance cost
• Enable flexible and reliable indoor designs

👉 In simple terms, lighting is not decoration—it is a growth requirement.

Electricity is not just a cost in vertical farming. It defines profitability.

However, a common mistake we see across projects is this:

Teams try to reduce electricity by lowering light intensity or reducing operating hours.
The result? Lower yield, not real savings.

The real question is not:
“How to use less electricity?”
But rather:
“How to get more output per unit of electricity?”

Here is how we approach it:

1. Efficiency of Light (PPE)
Not all lighting systems convert electricity into usable photons efficiently.

Higher PPE (μmol/J) means more light output for the same power input.
Upgrading to high-efficacy LEDs can reduce energy consumption by 30–40% at the same PPFD.

2. Spectrum Optimization
Plants do not utilize all wavelengths equally.

By adjusting the Red:Blue ratio, we can influence plant morphology and improve productivity per watt.
Targeted spectrum leads to better results without increasing energy input.

3. Managing Daily Light Integral (DLI)
Many systems provide more light than the crop actually requires.

Once the plant reaches its light saturation point, additional light does not translate into growth.
It only adds to the electricity bill.

4. Thermal Load Management
Heat generated by lighting increases the cooling requirement.

Efficient fixtures with better thermal management reduce heat load, indirectly lowering HVAC energy consumption.

5. Peak Load Optimization
Electricity tariffs vary across the day.

Shifting the photoperiod to off-peak hours can significantly reduce the cost per unit of electricity.

The shift is simple:
From reducing electricity usage to optimizing energy efficiency.

For those working on vertical farming economics, this approach can significantly improve overall ROI.

Most grow lights look powerful. Few are actually efficient.

That’s the gap we focused on while designing TL 400.

At 400W, the goal was simple:
More usable light. Less wasted energy.

What matters in real projects:

• Up to 3.4 μmol/J efficacy → more output per watt
• Broad spectrum (ePAR) → better plant response
• Passive cooling → lower heat, better reliability
• IP65 → works in real greenhouse conditions

The result?
Performance comparable to higher wattage systems,
with significantly lower energy consumption.

Built for:
Greenhouse | Supplemental lighting | Speed breeding

Certified: BIS, CE, RoHS

If you are planning a setup,
efficiency is not optional anymore.

Most growers measure light… but miss what actually matters.

In many projects, we see teams focusing only on PPFD.
They take a reading, set the light, and move ahead.

But here’s the gap

👉 Plants don’t respond to light at a single moment.
👉 They respond to total light received over the day.

This is where the difference comes in:

🔹 PPFD → Instant light intensity
🔹 DLI → Total daily light received

Same PPFD with different lighting hours can lead to completely different plant outcomes.

️ Many common challenges are linked to this:

• Slow or inconsistent growth
• Uneven crop performance
• Lower-than-expected yield

Simple understanding:
DLI = PPFD × Photoperiod

To simplify this, we built a quick calculator 🎯
Enter PPFD and lighting hours → get DLI instantly

understanding DLI can significantly improve results.

Plant Lighting Requirements for Living Walls

Introduction: In today’s architecture and interior design, living walls are a fusion of nature and modern aesthetics. These installations bring life to spaces, offering benefits beyond ornamentation. By integrating nature indoors, they enhance ambiance, improve air quality, and create a stronger connection to the natural world.

What Are Living Walls? Living walls, also known as green walls or vertical gardens, consist of plants arranged vertically on a structure. They enhance air quality by reducing pollutants, create a serene environment, and promote well-being.

Importance of Lighting for Living Walls: Light plays a vital role in plant growth. It powers photosynthesis, enabling plants to produce food. Proper lighting directly impacts plant health, influencing growth patterns, flowering, and overall well-being.

Natural Light vs. Artificial Light: Natural sunlight is ideal but may not always be feasible indoors. Artificial lighting provides a reliable alternative with controlled conditions. Balancing both is important, as each affects plant growth differently.

Lighting Requirements for Different Plants: Plant species used in living walls have varying lighting needs. Some thrive in low light, while others require higher intensity. Understanding light intensity, duration, and spectrum is key to sustaining healthy plants.

Lighting Design Considerations: The type of lighting fixture affects plant growth and visual appeal. Ensure light output meets plant needs while complementing the design intent of the space.

Common Lighting Mistakes to Avoid: Common mistakes include misjudging plant lighting needs, choosing high-light plants for low-light areas, and inadequate lighting provision. Select suitable plants and ensure proper lighting installation.

Maintenance Tips: Routine checks, cleaning, and adjustments are essential. Inspect faulty bulbs, clean fixtures, and adjust light heights as plants grow to maintain system health.

Proper lighting is crucial for thriving living walls. Understanding plant needs, avoiding mistakes, and consistent maintenance ensure long-term success.

🌱 Basic Growing Protocol for Indoor Microgreens

As we are conducting trials and supplying lights for indoor microgreen farms, we observed a simple protocol that works consistently well.

Here are the key parameters:

🌡 Temperature
Ideal range: 18°C – 24°C
• Warmer side → Faster growth, but higher mold risk
• Cooler side → Slower growth, but stronger stems

💧 Humidity
Ideal range: 40% – 60% RH
Balanced humidity helps avoid fungal issues.

🌬 Airflow
Gentle air movement.
Leaves should show a slight “shiver.”
This improves stem strength and reduces mold risk.

💡 Lighting
• Spectrum – Nx6.2
• Intensity – 120–180 µmol/m²/s
• Photoperiod – 16 hours per day

Microgreens are sensitive but predictable when environment is controlled properly.

The Role of Artificial Lights in Plant Nurseries

Artificial lights are important in plant nurseries as they help plants grow better, especially indoors or where sunlight is limited. Here’s how they help:

1. Extra Light When Needed

When there isn't enough sunlight, like on cloudy days or in shaded areas, artificial lights provide the light plants need to grow well. This type lighting is called Supplemental lighting

2. Helping Young Plants

Seedlings and young plants need plenty of light to grow strong. Artificial lights provide steady light, ensuring they develop healthy stems and leaves.

3. Boosting Photosynthesis

Plants use light to make food. Artificial lights are designed to give the right kind of light to help plants grow better.

4. Longer Daylight Hours

Some plants need longer daylight to grow well. Artificial lights can extend the light hours to help these plants thrive. This type of lighting called Pho-periodic lighting

5. Healthier Plants

With the right lighting, plants are less likely to become weak or sick. Artificial lights provide steady light that helps plants stay strong.

Conclusion

Artificial lights are a great tool for nurseries to improve plant growth, ensure year-round production, and keep plants healthy. With energy-efficient options like LED lights, nurseries can get better results while saving energy.
