Covid-19 is impacting the energy sector. The overall energy demand has fallen to levels which was never thought of.

But this would be a time to increase the share of the renewables in the grid.

As the demand is low coal generators are pitted against each other to run them and provide low cost power. This is making them unviable.

We as a group need to use this opportunity to provide green energy to the customers. We also need to think over having a balance between green energy generation and stability of the grid during low demand periods.

The prolonged slowdown will increase economic pressure on older, uneconomic power plants -- especially those that burn coal -- and help speed the transition toward cleaner and cheaper wind and solar. Many of the state Utilities are indirectly opposing Solar as it takes away their high paying customers.

It is fair on their part as they need increase their sales as well as be profitable.

Hawaii has found out a way to resolve this issue. It is know as "Decoupling". Here the utility is not pressured to increase sales. Rather they are awarded when they sell less electricity.

This helps promote energy efficiency by state utilities as well as go green.

All our governments should consider this model as a way forward to benefit the customers, state utilities and the environment.

Hawaii is leading the country’s renewable energy efforts, which it credits to progressive state policies and the implementation of modern technologies. What can other states learn from its experience?
