This year the World Environment Day is themed on ‘ecosystem restoration’ and calls for urgent action to revive our ecosystems which are being constantly degraded by improper natural resource management.
According to the United Nations, the world loses enough forest every three seconds to cover a football pitch and over the last century over half of our wetlands have been destroyed. “As much as 50% of our coral reefs have already been lost and up to 90% of coral reefs could be lost by 2050."
Ecosystem restoration means preventing, halting, and reversing this damage – to go from exploiting nature to healing it. It also calls for assisting in the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded or destroyed, as well as conserving the ecosystems that are still intact.
Involvement of Indigenous communities with eveolved knowledge about their local ecosystems is crucial in the preservation and restoration of ecosystems.
The day will kick off the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a global mission to revive billions of hectares lands.
This is call for every individual to be a part of this decade to ensure the survival of our planet and all the species which thrive on it.
