On November 18, 2022, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), ISRO involved in major activities of Gaganyaan conducted the ā€œIntegrated Main Parachute Airdrop Test (IMAT)ā€œ of its crew module deceleration system at the Babina Field Fire Range (BFFR) in the Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh.

These tests simulate different failure conditions. The one conducted simulates the case when the main parachute fails to open. A 5-ton dummy mass (equivalent to the Crew module mass), was dropped from 2.5 km using the Indian Air Force's IL-76 aircraft. Two small pyro-based mortar-deployed pilot parachutes then pulled the Main parachutes. The fully inflated main parachutes reduced the payload speed to a safe landing speed and the payload mass landed softly on the ground in a sequence that lasted about 3 minutes.

The test marks a significant milestone toward accomplishing the Gaganyaan project.

EOS-06 images Cyclone Mandous and detects Algal Bloom

Cyclone Mandous is imaged by EOS-06. The image of the cyclone is a combination of cloud structure captured by Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM) with wind vector data derived from the Scatterometer.

High winds associated with the cyclone center could be well-captured due to a unique combination of optical and microwave remote sensing-based data.

OCM onboard EOS-06 has identified algae (coccolithophore) blooming off the coast of Argentina in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Overgrowth of Coccolith formation is potentially harmful. It reduces the alkalinity of seawater and releases CO2 and thus plays an important role in ocean biogeochemistry.

The first blowdown test of the newly realised Trisonic Wind Tunnel was held on 8th December 2022 at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. The Trisonic Wind Tunnel is a system to aid the aerodynamic design of rockets and re-entry spacecraft by characterizing a scaled model by evaluating forces, moments, load distribution, unsteady pressures, acoustic levels, etc. The tunnel has an overall length of about 160m and a maximum cross-section of 5.4m. The tunnel can be used for testing various space vehicles in three flight regimes - below the speed of sound, at the speed of sound, and above the speed of sound: hence the name trisonic wind tunnel. The tunnel can simulate flight conditions from 0.2 times the speed of sound (68 m/s) to 4 times the speed of sound (1360 m/s).

The blowdown was formally switched on by Shri S Somanath, Chairman, ISRO/Secretary, DOS in presence of senior officials of ISRO including Dr. S Unnikrshanan Nair, Director, VSSC, Dr. V Narayanan, Director, LPSC, and Dr. D Sam Dayala Dev, Director, IISU.

The trisonic wind tunnel is a major step towards India’s increasing self-reliance in the Aerospace sector.
