Ever wonder why we don’t just pour concrete flush against the rebar? 🧱
Concrete cover is the distance between the reinforcement bars and the outer surface of the concrete. It’s not just a gap; it’s a shield. Here is why it’s non-negotiable for columns:
1️⃣ Corrosion Protection: It keeps water, salt, and oxygen away from the steel. Without it, the rebar rusts, expands, and cracks the concrete from the inside out.
2️⃣ Fire Resistance: Concrete acts as insulation. In a fire, the cover protects the steel from reaching temperatures where it loses its structural strength.
3️⃣ Bond Strength: It ensures the rebar and concrete act as one single unit to carry those heavy vertical loads.
Don't skip on the spacers. Do it right, build it once. 🔨
