According to American geologist Jess Phoenix, the force of most quakes like this releases energy equal to about 334 atomic bombs (as reported by CNN).

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar released energy equivalent to 355 atomic bombs.

The Sagaing Fault is a major right-lateral strike-slip fault. This fault system is responsible for numerous large earthquakes. The slip rate is 18–20 mm per year.

Earthquakes in this region are influenced by subduction of the Indian Plate beneath the Sunda Plate along the Andaman Trench. This subduction generates deep and shallow earthquakes.

Based on calculations using the Gutenberg-Richter equation, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake releases approximately 355 times the energy of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.
