Er. Surender Kumar, Director (Civil) Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd. visited the project sites of Package-I and Package-II of Chanju-III Hydroelectric Project being executed on Chanju river in Chamba district.

During the visit Sh. Surender Kumar carried out a comprehensive review of the ongoing construction activities, with a clear focus on ensuring timely completion of the project. Key challenges impacting progress were discussed in detail, and necessary guidance was also provided to address them effectively.

He issued directions to expedite the remaining works in both packages and emphasized the importance of completing the project within the stipulated timeframe, reaffirming HPPCL’s commitment to efficient ex*****on and excellence in infrastructure development.

Er. Sunil Thakur, General Manager-cum-HoP, other officers and employees of Chanju -lll HEP were also present on the occasion.

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu reviewed the progress of the 450 MW Shongtong–Karcham Hydroelectric Project on the Satluj River during his two-day visit to Kinnaur district. During the visit, he inspected key project components including the powerhouse, surge shaft, and barrage, and interacted with engineers and workers on site.
The Chief Minister directed officials to accelerate construction activities and ensure the completion of the project by the end of this financial year. He reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to strengthening clean energy infrastructure and emphasized the importance of sustainable development. He noted that the project will significantly enhance Himachal Pradesh’s power generation capacity, promote energy self-reliance, and support environmentally sustainable growth.
Highlighting the progress, he stated that nearly 75% of the project work has been completed. Major civil works such as the barrage, head race tunnel, and powerhouse structures are at advanced stages, while electro-mechanical works are progressing in a phased and coordinated manner. Despite various challenges, the State Government has ensured proactive monitoring and improved planning to maintain steady progress, with continuous technical interventions to address site-specific issues.
Upon completion, the project is expected to generate approximately 1,579 million units of electricity annually, strengthening the state’s energy portfolio and grid stability. It is also projected to contribute around ₹900 crore annually to the economy of Himachal Pradesh.

Shri Vinay Kumar, Hon’ble MLA and President of Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee, today performed the Bhoomi Poojan ceremony to mark the commencement of Diversion Tunnel (DT) works under Package-1 in the outlet area of the Renukaji Dam Project—an important step forward in the project’s implementation.
On this occasion, Shri Vinay Kumar emphasized the project’s progress, significance, and its positive impact on regional development. He noted that the initiation of DT works will accelerate both the technical and overall advancement of the project, while also contributing to future water supply to NCT of Delhi and related objectives.
Package-1 involves the construction of three diversion tunnels, each approximately 1455 meters in length, with a proposed internal diameter of about 9.50 meters. These tunnels will enable the diversion of river flow, ensuring safety and facilitating the smooth ex*****on of the main dam construction.
The diversion tunnel works constitute a vital and foundational component of the project. The Package-1 contract has been awarded to Patel Engineering Limited at an estimated cost of ₹910.08 crore, with a completion timeline of 30 months.
The ceremony was attended by Sh. Arun Kumar, HoP, Renukaji Dam Project along with other project officials and staff. Representatives from Renukaji Congress Committee, including Mandal President Shri Tapender Zaildar, and General Secretary Shri Nater Singh Tomar, as well as other dignitaries and local representatives were also present on the occasion.

Milestone Achieved at Chanju Hydro Electric Project!

The 48 MW Chanju Hydro Electric Project being constructed by Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited in Chamba district has achieved a significant achievement by successfully completing the first-phase milestone of the Head Race Tunnel (HRT) with a breakthrough between Face 0 and Face 1, covering a length of 1,117.69 meters with a tunnel diameter of 3.1 x 3.2 meters.

This breakthrough connects approximately 1.8 km of the total 5,145.84 meters long tunnel, while construction continues simultaneously across multiple fronts—marking steady and strong progress in this vital project.

This accomplishment stands as a testament to the dedication, technical expertise, and relentless efforts of our engineers, contractors, and workforce, who have successfully navigated challenging Himalayan geological conditions.

With this milestone, HPPCL moves one step closer to commissioning the project and contributing to reliable, clean, and sustainable energy for Himachal Pradesh.

450 MW Shongtong Karchham Hydel Project Achieves Key Construction Milestones: Revenue Minister
A meeting of the Cabinet Sub-Committee was held today under the chairmanship of Revenue and Tribal Development Minister Shri Jagat Singh Negi to review the progress of the 450 MW Shongtong Karchham Hydroelectric Project. During the meeting, Shri Abid Hussain Sadiq, Managing Director, Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL), gave a detailed presentation on the project’s current status.
It was informed that the river diversion work of the Shongtong Karchham Hydroelectric Project has been completed, while construction of the barrage is nearing completion. Additionally, 81.91 percent of the feeder tunnel construction has been completed, and hydro-mechanical works of the project have also commenced.
Shri Abid Hussain Sadiq stated that the target is to commission one unit of the project by December 2026, and work is being carried out at a rapid pace to achieve this goal. He further highlighted that HPPCL has achieved several significant milestones, including the widening of three vertical pressure shafts and the completion of Unit-I of the powerhouse.
Expressing satisfaction over the progress, Minister Shri Jagat Singh Negi directed the officials to expedite the work on the Integrated Kashang Hydroelectric Project as well and ensure the timely completion of all ongoing projects.
The meeting was attended by Director (Personnel & Finance) Shri Naresh Thakur, Director (Civil) Shri Surender Kumar, General Manager of the Shongtong Karchham Hydropower Project Shri Sunil Kanwar, along with other senior officers and officials.

Chanju-III Hydro Electric Project Achieves Major Construction Milestone

The 48 MW Chanju-III Hydro Electric Project, being constructed by Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) in the Churah Sub-Division of Chamba District, has achieved a significant construction milestone.
The Project today successfully completed the breakthrough of the 303-metre long Lower Limb of the Inclined Pressure Shaft, having an excavated diameter of 3 metres, between the Bottom Horizontal Pressure Shaft and the Intermediate Horizontal Pressure Shaft. The breakthrough was accomplished with the highest levels of precision, safety, and engineering excellence using advanced Raise Climber equipment.
The Pressure Shaft is a critical component of the hydroelectric project, and the successful completion of this breakthrough marks an important step forward in the overall ex*****on and timely completion of the Project.
Civil works under Package-I and Package-II of the Project are progressing steadily at site. The Chanju-III Hydro Electric Project comprises two diversion weirs: one on Chanju Nallah at an elevation of 2105 metres near village Dantui, and another on Mahed Nallah at an elevation of 2100.50 metres. The Power House, with an installed capacity of 48 MW (3 x 16 MW) is located on the left bank of Chanju Nallah at an elevation of 1616.50 metres near village Lunekh, just upstream of the confluence of Chanju and Mahed Nallah.
The civil works for the Project were awarded under two packages in December 2022, with completion scheduled by September 2027. Recently, the Electro-Mechanical (E&M) works for the Project have also been awarded in December 2025, further accelerating progress toward commissioning.
Upon commissioning, the Chanju-III Hydro Electric Project is expected to generate approximately 176.19 million units of clean and renewable energy annually, contributing significantly to the power sector of the State and reinforcing Himachal Pradesh’s commitment to sustainable development.
