We hosted Shri Shubir Singh, IAS, Secretary of PHE and INFC Department, Leh, at our automated ice reservoir at Sakti. The site is now in its second year of operation with visibly better results compared to last year. We walked through the working of our AIRs- from understanding the system’s mechanics to discussing scalability. The dialogue reflected a shared curiosity for its impact and future potential.

Over the last few weeks, our team represented Acres of Ice across key platforms in Ladakh carrying forward conversations around water security, climate resilience and mitigation.

At seminar at the Grand Dragon Hotel , Deepanshu presented our ongoing partnership highlighting projects in Chanigund (this year), and Ayee & Igoo (last year). The focus was on what these interventions are actually translating into on ground measurable water volumes, expected seasonal impact, and how ice reservoirs are strengthening local water systems.

At the Department of Disaster Management, Basit represented Acres of Ice in discussions around GLOF mitigation, positioning our work as a systems-driven approach to risk reduction. Alongside this, we introduced an idea to channel glacial lake water into controlled ice reservoir systems reframing excess water from a potential hazard into a managed resource, while contributing to lowering GLOF risks at vulnerable regions.

New look. Clearer purpose.

Acres of Ice builds and automates water management solutions for high-altitude regions where access to water and its efficient use is increasingly critical and infrastructure has historically lagged behind.

Our new website reflects the clarity of that mission.

IMD reported a 50% precipitation deficit in Ladakh over the winter months. This winter, the classic view from Leh of the magnificent Stok Kangri standing tall at 6,120m was barely fully covered with snow. The cryosphere has suffered and a potentially harder summer lies ahead. The world is entering a state of "global water bankruptcy" — with over 2 billion people living in water-stressed regions, according to the UN.

Amid these reports, Acres of Ice has been hard at work — building automated ice reservoirs across 12 villages in Ladakh with the support of UT Ladakh Government and storing a total of 31 million cubic meters of ice or ~25 million litres of water.

On this and , here is what adaptation looks like. These structures are proof that community-led climate adaptation is possible in vulnerable mountain communities!

Deepanshu and Tashi represented Acres of Ice during a recent visit to Gangtok, following an invitation from the Department of Science & Technology, Sikkim () to present our work and engage with state departments on the feasibility of Automated Ice Reservoirs (AIRs) for strengthening the city’s drinking water resources.

As part of the engagement, a joint field visit was conducted at Has Pokhari, Tamzey to undertake a preliminary assessment of site conditions for potential AIRs installation. This was followed by a technical meeting at the Public Health Engineering Department, Sikkim, attended by senior officials from the Science & Technology Department and PHE.

Discussions focused on Gangtok’s seasonal water stress during the lean winter months, when spring discharge reduces significantly while demand remains high due to resident consumption and a large floating tourist population. The potential of AIRs to store surplus winter water as ice and release it gradually during early summer was explored as a climate-resilient, low-energy solution to help bridge the city’s supply–demand gap.

The meeting outlined institutional roles, data-sharing requirements, and next steps, including the preparation of a detailed techno-commercial proposal by Acres of Ice for further evaluation and pilot implementation. Automated Ice Reservoirs were identified as a promising approach for Himalayan urban centers facing increasing water stress under changing climate conditions.

Over 14–16 February, our team showcased our automation and irrigation solutions at the 11th SKUAST-K Agritech Mela (GONGUL) at SKUAST Shalimar, Srinagar.

With stalls representing agriculture, technology, horticulture, animal and fisheries, agri art & craft and food, the mela became a vibrant platform for innovation and exchange among progressive farmers, growers, researchers and entrepreneurs.

Our stall welcomed 100+ visitors from different villages across Kashmir, who showed strong curiosity and interest in automation irrigation solutions. It was a valuable experience, helping us better understand Kashmir’s farming patterns and the real need of tech based innovations on farms.

Only old people stay behind. Houses are quiet, fields are empty, and a village full of life is slowly disappearing."

A few of our team members visited Ayee village for necessary surveys and maintenance before heading towards Yarma Gonbo Monastery. We stayed there for a day and had a meaningful interaction with students at the Siachen Alternate Winter Camp 2026, as a follow-up to their field visit last week with the Leh Global Shapers Community.

During a one-hour interactive session, we explained how our automated ice reservoirs function—how water is stored and how these reservoirs help address spring and summer water scarcity. Seeing the students’ curiosity, thoughtful questions, and enthusiasm was truly encouraging. We hope to see more youth in the field!

This year, the Yarma Gonbo Monastery, along with Lehshapers, organised a residential winter camp for students from across Nubra. As part of the programme, Lehshapers, in collaboration with Acres of Ice, organised a student visit to Ayee village to see the ice reservoir and learn about traditional water conservation practices and new technological innovations in this space. The children were fascinated and curious, sparking meaningful dialogue around the topic. Skarma Le facilitated the discussion, while Ajang Dorjee and Angchuk from the village spoke to the children about water scarcity and the construction of ice reservoirs to address spring water shortages for farming needs. We hope to see the youth more involved!
