These three skills: are drafting, CAD modeling, and CNC programming, are commonly taught to mechanical diploma students.
Drafting: Drafting is the process of creating technical drawings that communicate design and engineering information. In mechanical engineering, drafting is essential for creating plans and blueprints for various parts and components, such as engines, machines, or tools. These drawings can be created manually, with pencil and paper, or digitally, using computer-aided drafting (CAD) software. Drafters need to have strong spatial reasoning skills, as well as knowledge of geometric constructions, technical standards, and drafting conventions.
CAD modeling: CAD modeling is the use of computer software to create 3D models of parts and assemblies. CAD software allows mechanical engineers to visualize and test designs before they are built, making it an essential tool for product development and engineering analysis. CAD models can be created from scratch or from 2D drawings and can include features such as dimensions, tolerances, materials, and manufacturing information. CAD modeling requires knowledge of computer graphics, engineering principles, and software tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Inventor.
CNC programming: CNC programming is the process of creating instructions that control the movement of machines to produce parts and components. CNC stands for "computer numerical control," and refers to the use of computers to automate manufacturing processes. CNC programming involves creating code that specifies the tool path, cutting speeds, feed rates, and other parameters needed to produce a part. CNC programmers need to have strong math skills, as well as knowledge of machining processes, materials, and CNC software such as Mastercam or Fanuc.
