June 29, 1858, Birthday of US Army General George Washington Goethals.

General George Washington Goethals (born June 29, 1858) was an American engineer and army officer best known for his role in the construction of the Panama Canal. He was appointed as the chief engineer of the canal project in 1907 and served in that position until its completion in 1914. Goethals played a crucial role in the design, planning, and construction of the canal, overseeing a massive undertaking that involved excavating and dredging a 50-mile waterway across the Isthmus of Panama.

Under Goethals' leadership, the Panama Canal was completed on time and within budget, and it stands as one of the greatest engineering achievements in modern history. The canal revolutionized global trade and navigation, providing a shortcut for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Goethals' meticulous planning and organizational skills were instrumental in the success of the project. He implemented innovative engineering techniques, including the use of large locks and a system of artificial lakes to control water flow. His ability to manage a diverse workforce of engineers, laborers, and local residents under challenging conditions was also noteworthy. He died on January 21, 1928.

A landmark bridge in New York City is named after George Washington Goethals. The Goethals Bridge is a major bridge that spans the Arthur Kill, connecting Staten Island in New York City with Elizabeth, New Jersey. It serves as an important transportation link between the two states.

The Goethals Bridge was completed in 1928 and was named in honor of George Washington Goethals to recognize his significant contributions as the chief engineer of the Panama Canal. The bridge stands as a tribute to his engineering prowess and his role in shaping transportation infrastructure.

The bridge underwent a major reconstruction project and was replaced with a new cable-stayed bridge that opened in 2018. The new Goethals Bridge continues to serve as a vital transportation artery, facilitating the movement of people and goods between New York and New Jersey.

Early Years of Bridge Construction - Golden Gate Bridge - In June 1935 an earthquake struck the region as men worked atop the bridge's unfinished south tower. According to PBS' American Experience, one worker recalled, "the tower swayed 16 feet each way. There were 12 or 13 guys on top with no way to get down... The whole thing would sway toward the ocean, guys would say, 'here we go!' Then it would sway back toward the bay." Source: History Channel - 8 Surprising Facts About the Golden Gate Bridge.

We will talk bridge facts on this page going forward, every week. Periodically, bridge facts will be presented. We start with the Golden Gate Bridge this week and will cover facts periodically. Please share your bridge stories related to the feature presented.

Bridge Facts - The 1.7-mile-long Golden Gate Bridge, an icon of the San Francisco Bay region, connects the city of San Francisco to Marin County, California. At its completion in 1937, the suspension bridge was considered an engineering marvel—the longest main suspension bridge span in the world. It held that record until New York City's Verrazano Narrows Bridge opened in 1964 and, as of 2019, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan boasts the world’s longest span.

Today, the West Coast landmark draws millions of commuters—and tourists—each year. Here are eight historical and surprising fast facts about the Golden Gate Bridge.
