From At-Turaif to Erbil: Preserving Living History

The renovation of At-Turaif in Riyadh is a masterpiece of cultural preservation, where centuries-old Najdi architecture has been carefully revived to tell the story of the first Saudi state. Walking through its restored alleys and palaces feels like traveling back in time, yet with the comfort of modern curation. This incredible work made me think of our own heritage in Kurdistan, especially the Erbil Citadel. As one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited sites, it carries the memory of thousands of years of Kurdish and Mesopotamian history. I truly believe that with a dedicated vision, Erbil Castle could be developed in the same way — not only to safeguard our identity, but also to tell the world that we, too, have a history as old, proud, and alive as any civilization on earth.
