Marsýn ltd is a University of Iceland based start-up that specializes in oceanographic consulting for Icelandic waters. The company’s core is a hydrodynamic/biogeochemical model system, developed at the University of Iceland. Currently, this system produces daily forecasts of the ocean’s physical (e.g. flow, temperature, salinity, sea level, wave height) and biogeochemical (e.g. nutrient concentra
tion, plankton density) state (www.marsyn.is/sjospa). The high quality of the forecasts is mainly based on two aspects: First, the adaptively refined computational mesh which enables an extraordinary high resolution of the areas of interest, and second, in addition to the background data from the large European and U.S. American ocean/atmosphere prediction centres, the ability to assimilate local observations made by satellites, buoys and ships.
