a🌍 Mapping Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VME) in the Adriatic Sea! 🪸

We are proud to share our latest research, just published in the Journal of Environmental Management (IF 9.2)! The study investigates the distribution and biomass of the bamboo coral (Isidella elongata), a key habitat-forming species extremely sensitive to bottom trawling. By integrating MEDITS survey data, ROV observations, effort data (VMS/AIS) and environmental variables, the research provides support for the final delineation of the Fisheries Restricted Area (FRA) in the Otranto Channel. 🌊

🔹Habitat suitability and biomass modelling identified depth (specifically between 500 and 650 meters), seafloor slope, and fishing pressure as the primary drivers shaping coral distribution.

🔹Results revealed a clear inverse relationship between fishing effort and coral biomass, while highlighting areas of high suitability identified as potentially degraded.

These findings demonstrate the value of integrated modelling approaches to safeguard deep-sea ecosystems and support spatial management measures in the Mediterranean.

Siamo orgogliosi di condividere la nostra ultima ricerca, appena pubblicata sul Journal of Environmental Management (IF 9.2)! Lo studio indaga la distribuzione e la biomassa del corallo bambù (Isidella elongata), una specie chiave che forma habitat estremamente sensibili alla pesca a strascico. Integrando i dati della campagna MEDITS, le osservazioni ROV, dati sullo sforzo (VMS/AIS) e le variabili ambientali, la ricerca fornisce supporto alla delimitazione dei confini dell'area limitata alla pesca (FRA) nel canale di Otranto. 🌊

🔹L’idoneità dell’habitat e la modellazione della biomassa hanno identificato come principali fattori che modellano la distribuzione dei coralli: la profondità (in particolare tra 500 e 650 metri), la pendenza del fondale marino e la pressione della pesca .

🔹I risultati hanno rivelato una chiara relazione inversa tra sforzo di pesca e biomassa corallina, evidenziando al contempo le aree di elevata idoneità identificate come potenzialmente degradate.

Questi risultati dimostrano il valore degli approcci di modellazione integrata per salvaguardare gli ecosistemi delle profondità marine e supportare le misure di gestione spaziale nel Mediterraneo.

🐟 Tagging survey within the PAST project 🌊

The COISPA Foundation as part of the PAST Project (Action Plan for the improvement of Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) and Albacore Tuna (Thunnus alalunga) fisheries according to the MSC Sustainable Fishing Standard - Supply Chain Contracts Fisheries Sector financed by MASAF) is conducting tagging survey for albacore tuna and swordfish.

The project brings together fisheries expertise and satellite telemetry to study vertical and geographical migrations, monitor post-release survival, and support sustainable management standards. Through collaborative tagging operations with local fishing fleets, PAST aims to promote the environmental, economic, and managerial sustainability of the fisheries involved towards the implementation of an Action Plan. ⚓

🐟 Operazioni di marcatura all'interno del progetto PAST 🌊

La Fondazione COISPA nell'ambito del Progetto P.A.S.T. ( Piano d'Azione per il miglioramento della pesca del pesce spada e del tonno alalunga secondo lo standard di pesca sostenibile MSC - Contratti di Filiera Settore Pesca finanziato dal MASAF), sta conducendo campagne di marcatura di tonno alalunga e pesce spada

Il progetto riunisce competenze in materia di pesca e telemetria satellitare per studiare le migrazioni verticali e geografiche, monitorare la sopravvivenza post-rilascio e supportare standard di gestione sostenibile. Attraverso operazioni di marcatura e in collaborazione con le flotte pescherecce locali, PAST mira a promuovere la sostenibilità ambientale, economica e gestionale delle attività di pesca ai fini dell'attuazione di un piano d'azione. ⚓

COISPA at the 3rd International GRAB-IT Workshop in Ustica 🌊🌱

Few weeks ago, COISPA participated in the 3rd International GRAB-IT Workshop, "Resilient by design: Organic Food & Farming Systems amid CAP Volatility," held in Ustica, Italy.

Jointly organized by GRAB-IT and ISOFAR, the workshop brought together 47 international scholars at the Marine Protected Area Visitor Centre to discuss innovations in organic farming and agroecology. 🐟 COISPA presented a study on the systemic constraints affecting the implementation of EU legislation on organic aquaculture, conducted in collaboration with FEAP and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

This research underscores our commitment to bridging scientific evidence and sustainable policy frameworks for a more resilient sector. ⚓

📣 COISPA is proud to announce its contribution to the workshop "Cross-border cooperation in fisheries management: Best practices from the Mediterranean Sea" promoted by the EU Committee on Fisheries (PECH) 🇪🇺

The workshop focused on the results of three studies on different EU sea basins, exploring the cooperation of Member States on cross-border thematic areas, as the joint management of shared stocks and areas. The workshop highlighted differences on fisheries cooperation, identifying replicable examples of cooperation and best practices to successfully improve the state of fisheries resources.

The presentations were followed by a lively debate with interesting comments and questions from the PECH Members 🗣

New research on the impact of climate change on red mullet growth in the Mediterranean! 🐟

The study published in the ICES Journal of Marine Science provides new evidence on how climate change is reshaping the growth of red mullet (Mullus barbatus) across the Southern Adriatic and North-Western Ionian Seas. By analyzing otolith increments and utilizing spatially explicit modelling, the research quantifies how environmental drivers - primarily temperature - influence population dynamics under contemporary and projected climate scenarios highlighting:

🔹 Non-linear response to warming: an initial enhancement in growth by mid-century, followed by a potential decline by 2099 as temperatures surpass the species' thermal optimum.

🔹 Localized growth hotspots driven by fine-scale hydrographic variability: it demonstrates that climate impacts are highly dependent on specific regional environmental conditions.

These results underscore the potential vulnerability of red mullet populations to future climate change. Integrating these findings into assessment models is essential for developing climate-ready fishery management strategies in the Mediterranean.

COISPA is pleased to highlight the recent ICES workshop on Future Work on D3C3 (WKD3C3_Future), focused on enhancing the operational implementation of Descriptor 3 indicators within the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). 🌊

The workshop aimed to review national reporting methodologies from the 2018 and 2024 cycles, gathering scientific evidence to refine status indicators, particularly regarding length-based methods for data-limited stocks and the definition of threshold values. These efforts are essential to harmonizing future assessments of Good Environmental Status (GES).

📢 We are proud to announce that COISPA’s researcher Isabella Bitetto co-chaired this initiative, working alongside international experts to draft strategic guidelines for future implementation. The conclusions of this workshop will provide a foundational roadmap for scientific bodies and Member States.

⚓Kick-off of the FIDEL project!🌊

Few week ago, the FIDEL (Framework for Integrated Data-Driven IntelligEnce in Fisheries Monitoring, ControL and Surveillance) project was officially launched in Volos, Greece.

The project brings together fisheries expertise and digital technologies to support a new generation of fisheries control systems. Its central ambition is to make fisheries data more accurate, interoperable, and useful for all stakeholders. Through diverse pilots, FIDEL will test solutions alongside fishers and authorities, assessing their scalability and transferability. 📊

COISPA will contribute by leading socioeconomic analysis, overseeing quality management, and spearheading project engagement to ensure long-term policy impact.

By linking these demonstrations with commercial tools, FIDEL aims to accelerate their uptake for more resilient marine resource management. 🐟

Last week, the Workshop on Fish Distribution 3 (WKFISHDISH3) brought together experts to review data, methodological guidance, and habitat definitions used to map where marine species live and identify essential fish habitats.

Participants addressed key methodological challenges in species distribution modelling, laying the groundwork for future good practice guidelines.

They also explored approaches to identify essential fish habitats across multiple life stages and agreed on the need for a clearer, operational definition.

In the next workshops in the series, WKFISHDISH4 (2027) and WKFISHDISH5 (2028), participants will investigate essential habitats, species distribution shifts, and their implications for marine spatial management through a selected set of case studies.

The importance of connectivity in species distribution models was also highlighted. To advance this work, WKFISHDISH will collaborate with the Working Group on Integrative Ecosystem Connectivity (WGINTECO), which will be launched shortly.

🌊 New FAO|GFCM publication on the sustainable management of Mediterranean red coral! 🪸

A significant new FAO report, supported by COISPA’s contribution, has been released to address critical knowledge gaps regarding the management of red coral (Corallium rubrum) across the Mediterranean. This publication presents the comprehensive results of the GFCM research programme (2020–2023), which involved a wide network of international research institutes to provide science-based technical advice for the species' long-term protection.

This collaborative work represents a fundamental advancement in bridging scientific research with international policy, ensuring a more sustainable future for this iconic Mediterranean resource.
