Two days in Hungary for the European LIFE SandBoil project, combining a project meeting with technical visits to the sites where the barriers developed within the project have been installed.

A valuable opportunity for the partners to share the results achieved and observe first-hand the solutions implemented to mitigate Backward Erosion Piping, one of the processes that can threaten levee safety during flood events.

🏍️ A special encounter marked the start of the LIFE SandBoil project meeting in Hungary!

As we were setting off for Hungary, Brad Binder was returning from the Misano Grand Prix. And so, almost by chance, the University of Bologna’s LIFE SandBoil team met the MotoGP rider.
He was returning from his challenges on the racetrack, while we were setting off for ours: visiting the Hungarian sites where the mitigation measures developed as part of the project have been implemented and taking part in the final project meeting.

An important and exciting journey, giving us the opportunity to see the first results of the work carried out together with our European partners.

Each of us with our own profession… and our own challenges! 😊

🎬Research in action at the University of Bologna!

Today, professional filming took place during one of our medium-scale experimental tests for the LIFE SandBoil project, investigating seepage processes and Backward Erosion Piping in river levees.

We were also very pleased to have a special guest with us: Prof. Jean Côté from Université Laval, Québec 🇨🇦, who is spending part of his sabbatical year at the University of Bologna.

A great opportunity to combine experimental research, scientific exchange and international collaboration — this time, also in front of the camera! 🎬

🌊🇪🇺 The experimental levee of the LIFE SandBoil project is here!
We are now ready to start testing innovative solutions against backward erosion piping, one of the most dangerous phenomena for levee stability.

👉 This pilot levee is unique in the world and a true flagship for Italy: it will help improve the safety of our rivers and the communities living nearby.
