Since 1969 Flame Spray has been the first Italian job shop to actively promote Thermal Spray coatings and activities. Today it is an international benchmark for applications in these markets:

🔋 The surfaces that will enable the energy storage of the future

The storage of renewable energy (thermal or chemical) requires systems that operate with molten salts, liquid metals or highly corrosive substances at high temperatures. Conventional structural materials cannot withstand these conditions for long.
The future of the green transition will rely heavily on the development of advanced chemical barriers coated using thermal spray technology. At Flame Spray S.p.A. we are actively cooperating with the academic world to develop coatings suitable for protecting the energy storage systems of tomorrow.

On September 23, the Economic Council of the Croatian Chamber of Economy – Varaždin County Chamber awarded the Golden Kuna (Kuna d'oro) award for the medium-sized enterprise category to Flame Spray Croatia from Jalžabet.

The Golden Kuna plaque—the Croatian Chamber of Economy's traditional annual recognition for business achievements and economic impact—is awarded to the most successful large, medium, and small companies.

The selection is based on a ranking of business indicators obtained by processing annual financial statement data, as well as ESG ratings—a score assigned to an organization based on its corporate sustainability approach toward the environment and society, and its adopted management practices.

We started the Flame Spray Croatia project in 2009 in Varaždin, focusing on the coating of large components. In 2017, we expanded our facilities into a new 3,000-square-meter production center.

Today, our plant features three thermal spray systems — including two APS and one HVOF — with potential for further development and expansion of production capacity.
All processes are certified according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards, confirming high quality and environmental protection standards.

The award received from Croatian institutions confirms that Flame Spray Croatia is a key player in the development of the high-tech industry and investment in Varaždin County.

🧪 What’s inside a millimetre of protection?
🔎 The "secret" of MCrAlY alloys

In aeronautical and industrial turbines, operating temperatures often exceed the melting point of the base superalloys. To prevent this from becoming a critical issue, a specific family of protective coatings comes into play: MCrAlY materials (where M stands for a metal such as nickel or cobalt, Cr for chromium, Al for aluminium and Y for yttrium).

When sprayed at high temperatures, these elements do more than provide protection: they create a microscopic, stable protective oxide layer (TGO – Thermally Grown Oxide) that literally blocks oxygen. At Flame Spray S.p.A. the calibration of these alloys is an exact science.

HVOF vs APS: what technology protects your components best?

🔬⚡In surface engineering, there is no one-size-fits-all solution.
The choice of the ideal thermal spray process depends primarily on the challenges and mechanics that the critical component will face in the field.
Two of the most advanced and widely used technologies are HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) and Plasma Spray (APS).

Although both processes create high-performance coatings, their physical principles and fields of application are radically different:

How it works: it uses the combustion of oxygen and gas (or liquid) at very high pressure to accelerate powder particles to supersonic speeds.
