Gas turbines are widely used in power generation, where quick startup, high availability and reliability are needed to meet the increasing power demand under all steady-state and transient conditions.

But gas turbines operate in different climates and confront multiple atmospheric contaminants with various concentrations that can lead to performance degradation and component deterioration

Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) was invented in 1955 at the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio (USA). The first HIP device was nicknamed “The Gas Pressure Bonding Autoclave” and could reach a temperature around 800 °C and a pressure of 10.000 psi.

Although originally developed for the nuclear industry, the technique has become vital for gas turbines thanks to its unique ability to eliminate porosity in the treated material and produce 100% dense castings, thereby removing internal micro-defects.

HIP technology is capable of remanufacturing turbine components worn by thermal cycles, thereby extending their operational life.

HIP invention can be attribuited to a team of researchers including Dr Russell Dayton, Henry Saller, Stan Paprocki adn Edwin Hodge.
