INTRODUCTION
The University of Applied Arts is known for the excellence in teaching and research and is home to more than 1.800 students, many of whom with an international background. The range of p
rograms offered is diverse and includes architecture, fine arts (painting, graphics, sculpture, photography, ceramics), stage design, design (fashion, graphic design, graphics and advertising, landscape design), industrial design, media design (trans-media arts, digital art), conservation and restoration, pedagogic studies for artistic teaching disciplines, textile design and handicrafts. It is precisely the diversity of these artistic disciplines, which is supplemented by a large number of scientific subjects that contributes to the special atmosphere that prevails at the "Angewandte". The university sees itself as a place for free artistic and scientific articulation, as a forum for open discussion and a development laboratory for artistic visions, which should fulfill their potential and shape the society of the future. Our claim to be one of the world's best art schools and the retention of this position are indelibly linked to systematic efforts aimed at the permanent further development of our quality standards, the ongoing renewal of creative potential and the uncompromising promulgation of the freedom of the arts and sciences. The Studium Generalis Kalaritanum was founded in 1606 along the lines of the old Spanish Universities of Salamanca, Valladolid and Lérida. It originally offered Law, Latin, Greek and Hebrew Literature, the Liberal Arts, Medicine, Surgery, Philosophy and Science. When Sardinia passed under the House of Savoy government in the 18th century, the statute of the University was significantly modified, with the expansion of the science faculties and institutes. Designed by the Piedmontese engineer Saverio Belgrano di Famolasco, the new University building was completed at the end of the 18th century. The 19th and 20th centuries saw more and more emphasis placed on research activities, with the achievement of important, internationally acclaimed results, especially in the fields of Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Archaeology. In the 20th century, problems arising from severe damage to University buildings during the Second World War had to be dealt with, and reconstruction is only just now approaching its final phase. At the end of the 1960s ambitious plans were advanced for Anglo-Saxon types of residential university structures in a single body. Now the university has several main campuses in and on the edge of the city. The largest campus is situated in Monserrato, on an area of 73 hectares. It hosts the science faculties, many departments with their respective faculties, and one of the University general hospitals, adequately integrated with other medical institutions. The other campuses are in a residential area near the shopping centre and the sea. There are excellent student facilities close at hand including halls of residence, canteens, libraries, museums and sports facilities. OBJECTIVES OF THE MASTER’S PROGRAM
According to the regional policy PPSARDEGNA, “sustainability” will be a main economic and employment driver in Sardinia within the next two decades. The proposed master’s program directly responds to the smart city philosopy and “Sardinia CO2 Zero” strategies in its underlying philosophy, content and target audience, Therefore, the program is geared towards increasing the architects and engineers awareness and competence sustainable city and regional planning and urban research, in climate and energy design both on a macro and micro scale and to facilitate their future professional role both in local authorities and in private sector activities. For the reasons mentioned above, the teaching and research will closely consider the specific local conditions for the target audience of Sardegnien students with the main goals
to develop specific professional skills that increase their employability in Sardinia and abroad
to support the creation of jobs in Sardinia and attract high quality employers to Sardinia
to act as multiplicators for the vision of a sustainable Sardinia
At the same time, the comparison with different climatic and cultural conditions within Sardinia but also on a national and global scale will be a basic issue for the growth of a new professional generation able to think and act locally and globally. SPECIFICITY AND CONTEXT
The course will investigate within the Power Plant Sardegna strategies the implications of the “two sardinian” identities, generating the entropical movement from the water temples in Santa Cristina, the mystical heart of the secret island, to Cagliari, the multi-ethnical water-core of the Tyrrenian-mediterranean area. The teaching and research program will emphasize the relationship between the territorial scale of the “low density Sardinia” and the urban scale of the “high density Sardinia” (Cagliari Metropolitan Area/ Olbia/ Sassari). CONCERN
Although the regional Sardinian context represents the main field of research, the teaching will be relevant and outstanding at an international level and the collaboration is geared towards the highest level in the research on sustainability. For this reason the topic of the master should be the Sardinia Region, not as a specific location, but as a case - study to be extended to other regions/ areas/ continents in order to develop a vision for an ideal carbon neutral 2050. The proposed master’s program will be tailored to the needs of Sardinia and therefore will not be a standard program, but be specific to the problems and circumstances of Sardinia both with respect ot teaching and research. THEMATIC FOCUS
Thematically, the course is to be tailored to concerns of a sustainable environment and economy, with the aim in mind to explore the European Union's goal for a CO2-neutral environment by 2050. The University of Applied Arts Vienna has been asked by RAS to offer its expertise and services and due to its previous activities in this thematic area. Moreover, the University of Applied Arts has an important “hub” role involving some of the most outstanding international institutions. The program Power Plant Sardegna will concentrate on the potentials of a future Power Plant City/Region Sardinia in agreement with the RAS strategic assets:
-Greening/Sustainability (environmental/social/economical)
-Tourism
-Culture
-Optimization of public administration
